TLDR : Answer Summary
The Thai government has approved a new round of visa extension amnesty, allowing foreigners in the country to stay until September 26, 2020. This decision has sparked various opinions among expats, with some welcoming the extension as helpful, particularly for long-term residents on NON-O visas, while others argue it merely postpones ongoing visa challenges without solving them. The discussion also touches on the complexities of Thai border policies, the necessity of having the correct visa, and how the current pandemic situation affects travel and visa applications.

I do believe Thai Immigration wants all foreigners to get the proper Visa or Extension to stay here but are not waiving enough of the required process, procedures or protocols to allow that to happen for many staying here on this now near 60 day Extension of the original Amnesty. Result many will not be able to get a Visa or Extension by the deadline and will have to leave.

Note - at the deadline near the end of September - a person should be able to apply for an Extension based on nothing and get a denial with a 7 day stamp to leave Thailand (for 1900 Baht). But there is no guarantee Thai Imm. will do this
Nick ************
@Joe **********
I am told to get the correct Visa to stay but I cant without leaving the Kingdom which is not possible currently because the borders are closed. If I fly out then I will not be allowed to return. This makes no sense to me!
Alex ********
Lucky bastards....

I am stuck in Australia, not allowed to leave.

Id give my left testicle to be stuck in Thailand.

A lot if money has changed hands in the run up to July 31st. The same will happen in the run up to September 26th. Why change a successful formula?
James ***********
Truth in that.
Jamie *******
Why are so many foriegn men SO upset about the amensty? Count me confused. They are the only ones complaining? We have been waiting since March to get back to China. We appreciate the Thai government for letting us stay until the borders open again♥
Joe ***********
Two Foreigners married to each other and staying in Thailand do not follow the visa / Extension pathway above
Joe ***********
Jamie and others - There are TWO type of marriage "Visas"..

First type?. Foreign marries Thai woman. He goes and gets a 90 day Non Imm O Visa intended for marriage. Next He and She take marriage license, photos and lots of documents to Thai Immigration. He applies for an Extension of Stay one year with all the docs and photos Plus proof of 400,000 Baht in the Bank or proof of

40,000 Baht each month for 12 months from abroad. (the sequence of may vary). Key phrase "Extension of Stay).

Other way - Foreign man marries Thai woman. He takes marriage license, letter from wife and copy of her Thai ID card to the Thai Consulate in Savannakhet, Laos or Ho Chi Mihn City Vietnam. He pays 5000 Baht, presents docs, fills out an application for a Non Imm. O Visa One Year Multi-Entry based on marriage. No financial requirements. He must Exit and Reenter Thailand at least once every 90 days to get another 90 day stay in Thailand. Key WORD = VISA
James ***********
You have to have a visa here, as a non-Thai. You can only get a Non-O Family if you are legally married -- it is a requirement to gain the visa. There is also Non-O Retirement, which requires money in the bank.
James ***********
If you get your Non-O Family by coming in from another country (Lao, VN, CM), then you have to come-and-go.
James ***********
Without open & easy access between borders a lot of people are in limbo. Example: If I have a Non-O family and have to make a border trip each 90 days, then I go to VN, have a two-week quarantine there, return to Thailand and go through another two-week quarantine -- and have to buy a new insurance policy, be in a queue to get back in, and pay all the costs. Meanwhile the wife & children are here and the business languishes. Maybe in two months, things free up and doing that becomes normal.
Jamie *******
@James **********
if you are married dont you have a marriage visa and wouldnt the amensty apply to your visa also
Tony ******
@Jamie ****************
I've a married visa I'm here for a year before I reapply no need to leave and happy for everyone who's lucky to be in Thailand.Some are just bitter people and it shows they just attack anything and everything sad human beings
James ***********
@Jamie ****************
Yes, it does...and to your favor, as it allows you to stay put without travel requirements.
Jamie *******
@James **********
so if you are married to a Thai lady you still have to leave the country every 90 days?
James ***********
@Jamie ****************
If you get your Non-O Family by coming in from another country (Lao, VN, CM), then you have to come-and-go
Jamie *******
@James **********
so a non o visa is a work visa.
Jamie *******
@James **********
oh so the wife and children are not Thai
James ***********
And that visa can be a one-year, multiple-entry one.
James ***********
@Jamie ****************
Yes they are. The visa indicates that you are "visiting" your family (90 days at a time).
Jamie *******
@James **********
what if you are legally married, why would you need a non o visa?

- If the Thai Govt. and Thai Immigration does nothing to allow / facilitate Border Crossings - Nothing - absolutely Nothing can be done to help the greater majority of people stuck in Thailand - Except Leave and not be able to come back for 3-6-9 months
Todd *********
@Joe **********
they can just keep rolling out amnesty until they define a way forward that doesn’t require exiting the country. The olden days are over
Bobby ********
@Todd ********
. Malaysia just announced they are introducing State Quarantine along the lines of the Thai model, so I think you're right that land crossings are disappearing into the future somewhere. Although quarantine will eventually stop, I think the mandatory insurance will become a fixture for visitors to Thailand.
Todd *********
@Bo***
I tend to agree. Thailand isn’t acting in isolation at all. Like you say, Malaysia also looking after their interests. Cambodia, Laos, Mayanmar also. I think the insurance requirement for entry will be long lasting. And until there is mutual agreement with border nations about opening land borders, there isn’t a clear exit from amnesty under the current rules. As a result, those rules are basically irrelevant now. Thailand has to find a new way forward. So do the other nations.

, why should i apply for visa for after 26sep. If i don’t know situation , of course make sense for many people wait until closer to 26 sep. to know what is better and not bcos don’t care !!!
Billy *******
Thank you Thailand! I'm ok but look at what people are up against. There's a race war in the US, whites are getting assaulted and shot in the streets thanks to the George Floyd event, Europe doesn't strike me as a picnic to attend either. It's a big pain in the arse to travel back that's assuming you can get a seat at a price you can afford, so I think most people are like, um, is this virus nonsense over? Can I just travel freely to my next destination without all this extra nonsense? So yea, it'd be nice if everyone who is here can just chill for however long it takes for things to get back to normal. It'd be nice if Yellowstone erupted and the lava flowed east. The world would be a better place. Let's hope those US Navy ships in the Phillipines don't end up causing us grief here.
Nick ************
@Steve *********
if this is just another amnesty extension and nothing else has changed then a lot of people will not be able to do anything to Improve their situation in just the same way as it has not been possible for the last 3 months.
Todd *********
@Nick ***********
that’s true. Could just be more holding pattern. But that’s ok too. Once ‘amnesty’ truly ends, there will be a way to extend
Nick ************
@Todd ********
I did not expect a further free ride neither do I feel it is justified but I am not complaining. It is hard to follow the reasoning here behind almost anything but i have stopped worrying about it.
Todd *********
@Ni**
exactly. Who cares? Free or not, there is a structure. And when the global situation changes, there will be an exit plan. Relax and enjoy. #amnesty2021

my god!!! unless international flights , borders rules situation change!!!!! AND NOT LIKE RIGHT NOW THAT IS A NIGHTMARE!!!!, or u think this situation is for ever!!!!???? ..
Billy *******
Roy ***********
@Borja ********
If you believe things will change much the next two months, I think you are wrong. Thailand does not seem to relax much as long as there is a problem in other countries. I think not much will change before 2021.
Borja *********
@Roy **********
but situation improve or not that a question that can happen or not ,ok , but at least have the chance that change to bettee ,so clearly is 100% better this extension amnesty than no extension and make 300-400k ppl need to leave on a rush !!! And also if true what is been saying is posible apply for visa until 26 sep. so then u can stay thailand until dec...
@Nick ***********
I if someone not see the advantages is bcos blind!!! , thats why my block capitals , may be can see better...
Nick ************
@Borja ********
your last comment made a little more sense but I have no problem with my eyesight. When did I disagree with anything you said?
Borja *********
@Nick ***********
, i re-reading your post and may be i missunderstood it , sorry for that ,...i just trying to say that this extension amnesty can be a chance if situation improve in 2 months but also can happen not improve and still same, but at least there is a chance that wiil be better end of sep. , anyway if true what is commented we will have chance to apply for visa after 31 july until almost 2 months , so if neeeded stay in thailand until end dec.??? ,so the perspective for amnesty ppl is much better now ,...
Nick ************
@Borja ********
I understand. But they need to make it possible to obtain the vusa in Thailand without having to leave the country. If not and the borders remain closed the situation for most will be the same at the end of September. I am very grateful for what they have done and was not expecting another free extension. Well done Thailand!
Borja *********
@Nick ***********
absolutely u are right , and yeah i remember comments not long ago from many experts that for sure is not going be a free extension after 31 july and here we are!! with the free extension till 26 sep.!!! ...well they are talking that we will be able to apply for visas inside thailand and within this extension until 26 sep. but not yet sure until they came out with details how is going work , sure must be something about that ,...
Nick ************
@Borja ********
sorry, I haven't got a clue what point your comment is supposed to make and using block capitals has not helped at all.

There are genuine visa matters with people of long-term residency that this helps overcome. It is a serious and welcome near-term solution, especially for Non-O holders.
Joe ***********
The above B Visa Holder who is Managing Director of hid/her Thai Registered Company who has been on a Non Imm. B Multi-Entry Visa. If and only If that person has been adhering to all requirements of taxes, Social Fund Taxes, Annual financial statements and a multitude of other required document filings with DBD, Revenue, Social Fund and other departments.
Joe ***********
Same for Non Imm B Multi-Entry Visa Holders - unless the Thai Border Opens... The only thing that can be done is find an Accountant acting as a Visa Agent - work with the B Visa holders' company/ employer... draw up a mountain of documents - pay a tea money under the table and File for a One Year Extension of Stay. This is very difficult to do for many teachers, dive instructors and others odds and ends B Visa Employees.
Joe ***********
Unless something else happens relative to Thai Border opening the only thing a Non Imm O Multi-Entry holder can do is scrape up 400,000 Baht - get it in a Bank Account and Apply for a regular one year Extension of Stay. That's it.
Graham *********
@James **********
how does it help? Looks like it’s a continuation of the same.
Steve *******
@Graham ********
As James says it helps long term residents with multi entry non imm visas who would normally have to leave every 90 days, especially with the current entry restrictions and closed borders.
Joe ***********
@Steve ******
No it does not. Until there is a published set of guidelines - waiving the Exit and Reentry out and back into Thailand - No Border Run can be made. Thai Immigration does not control IF Thailand will open the Thai Border. The central government controls that. No open borders - then no chance of a Border Run for Non Imm B or O Multi-Entry..
Steve *******
@Joe **********
What are you talking about? That's what I said. It helps multi entry non imm visa holders because the borders are CLOSED. FFS!
James ***********
@Steve ******
Yes...this is the help for now. Hopefully those who have to make a border bump will be able to do easily later, because it's not good now.
Roy ***********
De Mace The problem is not solved, it is only trasfered to a new date. So a continuation of the same sounds like a good description to me.
Graham *********
De Mace it helps me and many others, but not sure how it helps non-O holders and long term residents.
Graham *********
De Mace I know that a lot of people need to leave to apply for things.
Graham *********
De Mace it helps some, but no more than the previous 4 months of amnesty. There are still plenty who, as you said, need to do things outside the country. Last week they teased perhaps being able to apply for visas within Thailand during a “grace period”, but it seems like a continuation of the amnesty.
Graham *********
De Mace I said it helps me and many others, including you it seems 🙂
