What should I do about my Thai visa during the blanket amnesty period?

ATTENTION NEW MEMBERZ:

IF you are on a 30 day entry stamp, a 60 day tourist visa entry stamp OR a 30 day normal extension from one of those you do NOT need to go to the immigration office (or even contact them) until they tell you what will happen on the 30th <- the day the blanket amnesty expires.

IF you are on a long term extension of stay (retirement, marriage, raising children, employment, education etc) we are advising you GO get your new extension like normal

IF you are on a year-long, multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type visa <- where you bounce out and back in every 90 days we are advising you CONTACT your immigration office to see if you are covered on the blanket amnesty or not. (there are conflicting reports about it).

IF you are on ANY "under consideration" stamp from having used the embassy letter to get the "unable to travel due to covid-19" extension and your under consideration stamp is expiring we advise you CONTACT your immigration office to see how they interpret the rule of blanket amnesty.

The reason we are doing this IS that there are conflicting reports from people who have had "under consideration" stamps and DID visit their immigration office and were told they were NOT covered and they received the rest of their "unable to travel due to covid-19" stamp like normal

AND

There were reports from people on year-mulit-Non-Imm visas who also went to the immigration office and were told they were NOT covered under the blanket amnesty.

Given those reports IF you have the stamps I mentioned we advise you contact OR go to your immigration office and see if you are covered or not.

Happy to report that today I went to Chiang Mai Immigration to verify that my Non-Immigrant, Multi-Entry Business Visa (no work permit, valid until July 2020), with last 90-day re-entry stamp expiring on 19, April 2020 was covered under the automatic April 30 extension. I work as a consultant, and I know that many business owners have the same kind of visa as I do, and so I wanted specific answers for this less frequent visa type.

I had officers verify, and was told sure, no problem, that it’s covered. They added that of course, I need be looking out for any announcement around April 30 for further updates, and that as soon as borders are open, it’s expected that I’ll exit the country and re-enter, returning to the regular program. I required no documentation of anything other than my passport.

Thanks for all the patience and help along the way, Tod, Robert, and Mike.

I’m in exactly the same boat as you, last entry was in March. Just hope some air routes are open soon so u can dip in and out

Just wanted to share my experience. I went this morning to the "temporary" K Counter located in Muang Thong Thani.

My intention was to get a 30 days extension. I know I do not need an extension since the blanket immunity is implemented BUT I was under the impression that nothing would guarantee that I would be able to get an extension after the amnesty is waived, and also I will then be 2 weeks behind the end of my 30 days exemption entry stamp.

That's a thought that Tod also shared (he said something like 'I only trust the stamps on my passport', and I agree 100% with him).

However, upon arrival at the gates I was greeted by a very professional staff who asked if I was aware of the blanket amnesty. After that, he told me that I didn't need to do any extension yet and I could wait for the amnesty to be waived. He also told me I was free to get inside the building to ask for a 30 days extension if I wanted to. He assured me that I could get an extension after the amnesty is waived and I decided to trust him.

Time will tell if it was a wise decision or not.
Benjamin ******
When was that? I thought Muang Thong Thani was closed.

I arrived on a 60 day tourist visa, and I have already extended it for the 30 day visa which expires on the 26th of April. So at this point it’s “Netflix and chill” at this point right? (Lol)
Tod *********
ORIGINAL POSTER
Right, you get the "free to be" until the 30th when the government will tell people on that free extension what happens.

My extension of stay is due May 31st. I am out of Thailand and unlikely able to return in time. Any considerations for this scenario?

Best way to contact immigration is to email them. Their response time isn’t long. 👍🏾

ORIGINAL POSTER
that's actually contacting the foreign volunteers at the Phuket Immigration office.:(
Hillary *****
Update: I went to immigration today (visa expires april 16) and asked them if I can do a 30 day extension (this is my first extension) on April 30. A volunteer said yes, a Thai worker in the immigration office said no - if I don't do the first extension, then on April 30, if they open up the borders, you have one week to fly out.

This is the information I'm getting. Whether it's true or not, who knows. It's a gamble of whether the borders open up on April 30.
Hillary *****
They did sell the extension, but no one really knows if u can get one at the end of the month, bc from what I can tell, nothing official has been written.
Tod *********
ORIGINAL POSTER
And that's just conjecture. There is NOTHING that states you get a week to leave. That 7 days to get out after the borders open is ONLY for temporary border pass holders; Laotian, Cambodian and Burmese who were trapped in thailand when the borders closed.

So they wouldn't sell you the 'normal' 30 day extension on your entry stamp? Strange because most places ARE selling it if you tell them you want to buy it. They aren't selling the covid-19 stamps anymore because most embassies stopped issuing the letter and the blanket amnesty stamp until the 30th covers that.
Luisa ************************
Just done calling Immigration Hotline 1178 today and the operator told me that i don’t need to do anything now (no need to go to my local immigration office/do the online 90 days report) because of the visa amnesty. But he advised me to go to Nonthaburi Immigration Office to do the reporting on May 1. Anyway, i’m using Non-Immigrant B visa.
Benjamin ******
What do you need to do with your Non-B?
Natalia ***********
Thank you so much Tod, this is the question that I want to make, I got a tourist visa which will expire on April 17, so I don't need to go for the 2nd stamp (another 30 days) right?
Benjamin ******
Are you on your original 60 day entry stamp?

Hi good people. Could anyone assist? I am on a 90 day single entry Non O based on having a Thai Child. I received my Non O from Savannakhet and it's due to expire tomorrow. GO get the 60 day visit thai family extension.

There is little to no risk taking them out there. It's a ghost town now that all the tourists are gone (not going).

I'd say you probably DO qualify for the free 13 days amnesty BUT what will you do after that?

I'd say just go get the 60 day visit family extension and that will take you into June and by then you'll be able to bounce.
Jarrett *********
Thank you for your post
@Tod ********
and for accepting me to the group. The wording in all the reports is very confusing. Your post helps to clarify. Just to be sure, would you mind letting me know... My current 30-day tourist visa expired on March 24th. I went into the immigration office a week before that to pay for my first 30 day extension which expires on April 23rd. From my understanding on what you wrote above, then I could: A. Go to immigration office before the 23rd with a Embassy Covid letter and pay 1900 baht for another 30 day extension. Or B. I could do nothing because I am considered to be part of the visa amnesty until April 30th. Is that correct?
Jarrett *********
@Tod ********
Just wanted to provide you an update. Went to the immigration office today and they told me there’s nothing I can to do at this time. except wait until April 30th. They wouldn’t offer me the 30 day extension, even with my embassy letter. Interested to see what happens on the 30th.
Tod *********
ORIGINAL POSTER
that is 100% correct (y) well done understanding a tricky situation :)

Keep in mind no one knows IF you can use the embassy letter after the 30th if you take the free amnesty extension AND some offices won't even sell you a 30 day covid extension anymore and instead say you get amnesty until the 30th.
Fabián *********
I'm on a tourist visa, already "normally" extended until April 18th. I have my embassy COVID extension letter, my question is: should I consider April 30th to be my new date and wait until the 20 something or 30th to decide whether or not to use my letter, or can I only go before the 18th to qualify for a covid extension?
Geoff **********
Thanks,
@T**
. And likewise in every other country of the world I guess.
Tod *********
ORIGINAL POSTER
You either do NOTHING and take the "free extension until the 30" OR you go to the immigration office BEFORE you current stamp expires and try to apply for the 30 day unable to travel due to covid-19 extension and see what they say.

IF I was a betting man, I'd bet that IF you take the "free time" you can't use your embassy letter anymore :O BUT that's a guess :/

I entered Thailand on March 17 as tourist and got a stamp till April 15. Should I now go to the immigration to get my „normal“ 30 day extension (would be till May 15) or am I fine till the end of April.

What do you propose?
Tod *********
ORIGINAL POSTER
You entered on a 30 day visa exempt entry and you could sit tight and do nothing until the 30th when the government will tell people what happens next BUT there is no guarantee that after the "free blanket amnesty stamp" you can then get a 30 day extension on your visa exempt entry.

IF It was me, I'd go apply for the 30 day extension for 1900baht and have it take me until the middle of May, BUT that's just me, I trust stamps IN my passport

No one can make that decision for you, it's on you my friend.

Good Luck, stay safe (y)

Just called Phuket town immigration to ask about the status of "visa under consideration" (mine says must report back April 24th). I was told that I was OK until April 30th, so this would seem to be v good news for those of us in Phuket w/ "under consideration" stamps.

@Tod ********
Yesterday,I called both the national hotline and then CW in BKK and both told me that since I had permission to stay until March 29 under my extension on my visa exempt entrance, I did not have to come on April 23rd to get my under consideration stamp changed to valid to stay and get the rest of my days, and I would good for the amnesty extension until April 30th. I was pleasantly surprised by this. I will call CW to double check again on Friday. Don't know if this belongs in this section of this thread but put it here fyi and to get your feedback.

Also hoping to get an answer to this as I was given a 20 days, under consideration stamp and told to return then to recieve the extra 10 days. I'm wondering if they'll charge another 1,900 Baht for the extra ten days (a bit unfair when many others got a free ride until the end of the month)

My Covid Extension was done on March 31. They split it into 15 + 15 under blah blah. I am scheduled to go back on the 19th to get stamped in until May 4.

Not sure what will be done after May 4... Either another 30 day Embassy Letter Extension or the Freebie.

Joe, while getting advice in other groups, as admin of Ao Nangs largest admin group you can maybe also unblock me there so I can continue to give and get advice from others here in this situation (I was banned by Joe weeks ago, apparently for being "alarmist" about the pandemic which he didn't like). I have already had the extension of 30 days with an embassy letter that expires on April 18, I am in ko phangan and at the moment it is almost impossible to get to the immigration of ko samui for many reasons, and then I don't want to go too many cases to ko samui. can you tell me if they are ok until the end of April thanks
Ksenia **********
The problem is that I cannot go to Samui and they are not answering by the phone. And even if they answer one day it is no guarantee that the answering stuff know the rules and that they understand the difference with "under consideration" stamp. And whatever they answer you cannot proof it after. And they don't answer emails as well.
Ksenia **********
Tod, And it is also pissiable that they just didn't know the rules on 9th and all these people with "under consideration" will get into trouble then.
Ksenia **********
And they also collected passports on April 8 on Phangan and gave people passports back later on 8th without second stamp.

So it would be their mistake if these people cannot use amnesty. And I have a video.
Ksenia **********
I have "under consideration stamp" till April 20 and they tald me in emergency immigration on Phangan on 9th that I can stay till 30th.

NOTE: please realize the advice to contact your immigration office if you are on an "under consideration stamp" OR if you are on a year-long, multi-entry Non-Immigrant Type visa where you bounce every 90 days is just that ADVICE.

You are adults, you managed to get half way around the world on your own, you managed to get visas to be here, YOU decide what your comfort level is with the news "everyone is covered by the blanket amnesty until the 30th" statement.

If you're fine with accepting the news as it was disseminated to us, sit tight until the 30th and lets see what the government announces after that. (y)

Good Luck one and all :) Stay Safe

@Tod ********
First of all, thanks much for your great work - very responsive and super helpful.

My "under consideration" stamp was dated April 7; went to Chonburi Immigration on that very same date (just ahead of amnesty announcement), and received extra days to April 17. Technically, I'm on a 30-day extension, albeit not the classic version; given I'm not "under consideration" at the moment, would you still advice me to go to Immigration to double-check or simply assume I'm good till month's end?

Thanks much for eventual above and for your help anyways!!
