TLDR : Answer Summary
The costs associated with extending a retirement visa (Non-Immigrant O Visa) in Thailand can vary significantly depending on factors such as whether you are using an agency or doing it yourself. The general costs mentioned in the community include a fee of around 1,900 baht for the extension itself (valid for one year), while the use of a visa agency can range from 12,000 to 20,000 baht, potentially including additional services like multi-entry permits. Some individuals reported being quoted as high as 55,000 baht, often due to misunderstanding the services being requested or due to lack of funds in Thai bank accounts. It is advised to clarify quotes and understand the legal requirements for extensions, particularly concerning financial documentation.

I was talking about the Non-Immigrant O-A retirement visa.

The EOS costs 1900 baht. You get it while staying in Thailand on certain types of visa.
A visa is the paper that allows you to enter the country.
What are you talking about?

I say if you have to use an agent you can’t afford to live here

Hi all,
First post so bare with me.
Is applying for a retirement visa straight forward? I know applying to Spain is complicated for example. Can everything be done by me or would I need a visa agent? TIA 👍
Immediately open bank account and send 800k from abroad.
After 80 days Goto immigration and ask what exactly they want to see. (Bank statement and certificate, a passport foto, book bank with a transaction of the same day, ID of Thai wife, your passport,…).
Get those things and return with 1900 baht.
If you plan to exit more than 3 times per year, get a multi reentry permit.
would you know If I go on a Non O Visa (Retirement Visa) in August for 5 weeks, and open a bank account (put in 800k), can I go back home in September and return in February next year on a different Non O Visa and then go to Immigration with a bank account already set up?
Apologies if my question is showing my ignorance of the laws but I would rather have the bank account set up and then only have to apply to immigration when I go back in February.
Thank you for the reply. Much appreciated. I think I will still have to wait until the last 30 days of the new (2nd) Non O Visa to apply for the extension of stay but at least I'd have the bank account sorted out when I go back in February.
I always do the extension in the last days. 2-3 days before the end is enough time to get all paperwork done. But lookout for Thai holidays - I have added the Thai holidays calendar to the calendar app for that. (Important notice: if a Thai holiday falls onto a weekend, the next workday is holiday!)
it's easier at home than it is in Thailand. Especially since you have to have a Thai bank account or embassy certified income to apply in Thailand and you cannot get a bank account without already having a long term visa. So that means agent is the only option for the bank account
if you apply from a Thai embassy you can get the 90-day visa which will let you open a bank account once you arrive in Thailand. And that will let you prepare to apply for the 1-year extension.
I'll need a police certificate (UK criminal record check) too to get the extention so that will be at least 3.5 months old by the time I apply for the extension. Is that ok as someone said I needs to be within 90 days of issue which seems a bit tight timewise.
no extension requires a background check. There's one retirement visa that requires, which is the OA visa. But it has many other requirements and is not the visa most people want for retirement. The non-O is what most people want and the only real requirements are being over 50 and showing the correct amount of money.

You need to give more information. If you don’t already have a Non O visa, if you don’t already have a bank account, if you don’t have 800k to put in a bank account then 55k isn’t unheard of now due to the crackdown on bank accounts. Otherwise, it’s far too much.

I paid 55k got a bank account and many special features no jumping thru hoops for me. Thai VIsa Centre they are amazing.
without you being able to show own funds (800,000 THB), the initial 3-months Non-Imm-O visa, the opening of a bank account and the subsequent 12-months Extension of Stay, most agent’s prices start at 32,000 THB for the first year. All future renewals of the 12-months Extension will be something like 12-15,000 THB
second rd pattaya,I got bank account opened 90 days + 1 year retirement and multi entry, that was last may its up for renewal on 11th August im only getting single entry 13,500 baht.i went through an agency because I didn't want to tie 800,000 baht up in a thai account and I've got kids in uk and I believe it's hard to get the money out of my thai account.i don't know the prices this year for the visa's,mine took 21 days.

We paid 29,000 for a multi entry retirement visa in Pattaya
Did that include fees for opening a bank account. It seems a lot, but last January my wife and I were only charged 29,000 Bahts for a multi entry retirement visa.
I just did my EOS yesterday as I’ve been doing it for over 10 years now. Costs 1900 baht and 5-20 minutes waiting (and time doesn’t count anyway for a retiree ;) )

You were quoted this amount by which agency? It’s never been 55,000. It’s more likely you don’t understand what you were quoted for.
See the answer from TVC in this thread for correct answer.

Our fee for extension of stay based on a non-o retirement visa is 14,000 THB.

You can only apply for an extension from a 90-day visa based on the same reason as that visa was issued.
A non-OA is a 1-year retirement visa, not a 90-day non-O visa. If you get a non-O visa based on retirement you cannot apply for an extension based on marriage.
ok thanks Brandon. Maybe I stated something not clear. End of July im retired. But as my wife is Thai, i want to ultimately have the 12 months extension based on marriage. The immigration are excellent in Buriram and my wife and I have been there a couple times already.
But what seems difficult or rather frustrating, is I cant seem to select the correct 90 day initial visa. (Which I can only 3 months out from date i intend to arrive in Thailand which is middle October.
technically, you cannot "extend a visa". Immigration in their bad English call the extension of a temporary stay permit "visa extension". Which is absolute hogwash, as there is no "visa" they could "extend" because the single entry 90-days Non-Imm-O Visa became invalid upon entering Thailand. Every year, Immigration is extending the "stay permit", not the visa that doesn't exist any more
I rather think the OP means the next extension for an already existing 1-year extended stay permit, not for the first extension of the 90-days stay permit she obtained when entering on a 90-days Non-Imm-O Visa.If she has own funds, the service to apply for the extension would be like 12-14,000 THB
yes, took me a bit too, think it is when these folk talk to text and don’t bother to proofread what has been typed by the system… Extension to stay I am thinking 🤔 was meant.
thai bank account only? Or can it go into a foreign bank account? And what if it goes into the foreign bank account and then it transferred to the Thai bank account?
perfect thanks! I don’t mind using an agent, but I would prefer to have the money part squared away and legitimate. Seems that it’s safer that way. Thanks for the response.
pay someone and don't have to go anywhere and they will deliver it to your door while you're at the beach or bar so way better idea if you ask me for 22 k is all
Pretty expensive for a couple of hours work. That's 11,000 baht per hour. Don't find any jobs in Thailand paying that much! I'd just pay myself to do it.
theres more to it than 2 hrs I've done it before travelling alone will take 2 hrs the move the money ,banking office time lunch time it all adds up but hey each their own
Paperwork doesn't bother me, it's really only one form, a year's bank statement and a lease. I don't really call it work. All for 22,000 baht. For that I can fly from Bangkok to Phuket, have five nights in a nice hotel and still have 10,000 baht spending money. All for two hours "work". But yep, it's to each their own!
i do all that to and then some lol at my age money is no problem life is short to short to waste time in any office pretty sure most retired guys will tell you the same
