What are the current rules regarding entry into Thailand, especially when considering border runs and multiple entries?

Hi I hope someone could help me!

I have some concerns regarding some of the information I have found online, stating there is a limit of travelling into Thailand 2 times per calendar year, I also saw something saying about a 6 month period too. I have applied for a student visa but the school have said I have to do a border run as they are full and I cannot start until I return..

I entered Thailand on 17th October 2023

I then departed thailand on 13th December 2023

I returned to Thailand 27th December 2023

I then departed Thailand on 18th January 2024

I then entered Thailand on 8th June 2024 - 6 months after leaving

Can you just confirm that I won’t have an issue when doing the border run without a border run company and if so why would it be different with a border run company? Thank you 🙏🏼

TLDR : Answer Summary
The inquiry discusses concerns about the rules for entering Thailand multiple times within a year, specifically regarding the supposed limit of two entries by land and the outdated six-month rule. The user details their travel history and seeks confirmation on whether they would face issues doing a border run without a company. Responses clarify that there is a limit of two land border entries per calendar year, but no six-month rule exists; they also advise potential travelers to consider using border run companies to ensure re-entry into Thailand without issues due to immigration discretion.

When entering at an airport it's really just at the officer's discretion.

My mom entered up to 4 times per calendar year on a visa exemption and was never questioned.

I myself did a few entries on back to back visa exemptions (2 at the end of 2023 and another 2 at the beginning of 2024) after having been here on a Non-B for 3 years and even longer before that on a Non-ED. The officer could have denied me entry given my long history of non-immigrant visas followed by back to back visa exemptions... but they did let me in every time (though there was some questioning).

It depends on a lot of factors. Of course it could depend on the mood of the officer on duty that day, but it also heavily depends on how you behave and carry yourself. If you have that sort of entitled and irritated behavior that some people always seem to have with immigration officers, you might run into issues. If you're polite and honest you should be fine.

Only 2 visa exempt entries by land per year that's the only rule.

There is no 6 month rule, that was cancelled years ago.

In theory its unlimited by air visa exempt or with visa and by land with a VISA even tourist visas. But its down to the immigration officers decretion.

If they think you are living here without the appropriate visa they will refuse, but it should not a problem with your record.

If you are doing a out and back visa run by land go with a company.

Don't fly back same day if by air.

The only defined limit is 2 visa exempt entries per calendar year by land, but having said that every entry is at the discretion of the immigration officer you stand in front of. With your history I'd recommend you use a border run company as they will only take you if they can get you back in again

so as I entered in December but left in the January and didn’t enter again till June do you still recommend using a border run company as I only have entered once this calender year technically by plane?

Ok thank you for your time responding to my messages ☺️

I'd say it's your history from last year that's more of an issue as they will see a repeat of that pattern this year. Given you are keen to ensure you get back in to start studying I'd recommend taking the safe option and use a border run company

Ok great thank you so much! So as I entered December the 26th and then entered again June the 8th I should have no problem flying somewhere else then flying back?

you’ve been out of Thai for quite a while this year therefore just fly out to for example KL - I’d recommend getting a 60 day TR visa for the Thai embassy in KL.

IMO you shouldn’t have any problems coming back in on a TR visa but just to be more sure if you can don’t use Phuket or Don Mueng. Krabi is much better to do from experience.

@Jessie *****
nobody can answer that. You have a fairly recent history of being in Thailand on multiple tourist stamps. I'd recommend giving flights a miss and use a border run company to do a land border crossing

2 times by land or sea in a calender year starts 1 Jan. 6 month rule I've never heard of. Maybe post your source. Maybe get a visa if you are concerned
Mark *******
If you have entered by plane you shouldn’t have an issue. If your crossings were by land already, fly out and fly back in. You may have reached the 12 month period for entering by land - but I am not sure how they track that.

@Mark ******
it's max of 2 LAND BORDER BOUNCE entries into Thailand EACH CALENDAR YEAR.

@James *******
so if you cross by land, stay for a day, then cross back in that doesn’t count as a border bounce is what you’re saying
John **********
@Mark ******
no. That's a border bounce

what's your passport nation?

@Jessie *****
you are at RISK OF BEING DENIED ENTRY. LISTEN to what you are being told.

The reason people use a border run company is one, ease of travel and two, they will only take you if they are sure that you will be able to re-enter Thailand.

@Jessie *****
bottom line...you are at risk of being questioned by Thai Immigration Officers upon arrival into Thailand. Possibly DENIED entry.

The Best advice is to use an experienced border run service company to get you into Thailand.

Or you can use a FAST TRACK SERVICE Company to get you into Thailand if you are flying into Thailand.

Make sure they know your recent history of staying in Thailand and passport nation.

Good Luck 🍀

There is nothing about a 6 month period and stay in Thailand, that was binned in about 2009.

The two times is via land/sea in a calendar year.
