Is it normal to receive a visa application cancellation email without explanation in Thailand?

Apr 16, 2025
Hi all. I just got an email saying, "Your visa application has been cancelled." No other explanation was provided. I had applied for the DTV through a legal firm in Thailand - they said they will check with the embassy and find out the reason.

Is it normal to receive a cancellation email without any explanation?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user reported receiving a cancellation notice for their DTV visa application with no explanation. Community members discussed common reasons for such cancellations, noting that it often results from incorrect information in the application. They highlighted issues like using an agent for the application, mistaken data entries, and the lack of refunds from legal firms. It was emphasized that receiving a vague cancellation notice is normal and suggested that the applicant may need to reapply themselves for better chances.

A visa cancellation result from a mistake in the first 2 pages of the application on the e-visa website.

Meaning the legal firm did a mistake, so they should either refund you or deposit another application at their expense

When my application was canceled, I was given the reason (wrong place of issue) but it depends on the embassy.

They have a very poor automatic recognition system for passports, so you need to check everything 10 times.

Even 1 wrong letter will result in losing $400.

Thanks. I have asked the legal firm for the application they submitted. Absolutely devastated but let's see if the embassy provides any explanation.

Members, there is a huge distinction in the wording used for an application that fails.

Cancelled.... usually means incorrect data

Rejected.... usually means incomplete/insufficient application documents

Refused.... possibly means ineligible applicant (I can't recall if I've seen this word used in the email)

When you use an agent leave the country and apply there

Nobody gets a reason why, a application is rejected.

Why did you feel the need to use a "legal firm in Thailand" for the DTV? The requirement is that the applicant does it his/herself from OUTSIDE Thailand. This is why Thai visa agents hate the DTV: it's because they can't get a cut out of it. But here you go.

Something was probably entered incorrectly so unfortunately you’ve lost the money and will have to reapply and triple check everything before you submit

Wrong. When data is incorrect (name, place of passport issued, etc.), you receive a cancellation.

Yes it's normal. And unfortunately the legal firm will not be able to do anything about it. The only thing you can perhaps do is try and negotiate some kind of refund of the fees you paid to the legal firm? But probably in their small print it'll say something like no refunds if rejected, but worth a shot, especially if they made some kind of mistake with your application / the advice they gave to you

Thanks, I'll try and do that. I could reapply but without knowing the reason I don't want to risk it.

Unfortunately, that is the norm with cancelations. Very vague with no details. Which embassy did you apply via and are you in that county now? Someone recently had their application canceled in Vietnam and the paperwork has the visa firm’s email listed. They then reapplied without the firm’s support (information listed) and it was approved. Was the email used in the application the legal firm’s email?

I had applied under workcation. I'm waiting to hear back from Siam Legal tomorrow after they review and speak to the embassy.

I'm not sure if I should reapply on my own right away. Any guidance?

Applied through the Thai embassy in Bangladesh. I'm based here. I got the email directly so I think mine was used? But I'm not able to check the application status on the site since Siam Legal - the legal firm - used their account to submit the application

Thanks mate. Such a bummer. E visas were only introduced here in Jan and nobody to my knowledge has gotten a DTV from Bangladesh yet. Hence I had engaged with a Thai legal firm. I have asked them to share with me the application they submitted btw.

Anonymous participant Sorry your application was cancelled.

Pardon me,vbut I believe that the use of an Agent as you did was the problem.

Their involvement was seen by the Thai Embassy. It appears to be a red flag when that happens. As seen in other similar denials.

For what purpose did you apply for the DTV visa?

Workcation or Soft Power...

Or ???

Anonymous participant - prior, you didn’t need to do e-visa. I submitted mine in person back in July. You could have done the same in Bangladesh before Jan. Someone posted last week that they got approved via. Bangladesh.

Cancelled Application

This means that some information was entered incorrectly in the online application — such as a wrong passport number, a spelling error, or something similar.

Which embassy did you apply through?
