Why was my DTV visa application rejected despite providing required documents?

Hi! I’m currently trying to obtain a DTV visa but was rejected without any explanation. Here’s some background on my situation:

I applied for the DTV Soft Power Visa in Ho Chi Minh City and submitted the following documents:

- Entry stamp to Vietnam.

- Bank statement showing a balance of over $60,000.

- A treatment plan from one of Bangkok’s top dental clinics for braces, which is a two-year process.

- I indicated that I am currently unemployed and have no income.

Additional context: I held a 1-year ED visa in 2023/2024, made one border run in 2022, and entered Thailand multiple times via airports. During my last visit to Thailand in December 2024, an immigration officer handed me a form to fill out and informed me that next time I won’t be able to enter visa-free because I had spent too much time in Thailand. He advised me to apply for a DTV visa for future entries.

After submitting my application, I was asked to provide the following additional documents:

- "Provide the entry stamp to VN": I’m unsure why this was requested again, as I had already provided the same stamp.

- "A deposit account shows the transactions last 6 months and the account balance or a combination of a deposit/saving account totaling not less than 500,000baht. Stock/Crypto/Bitcoin/Investment/Business/PayPal account and sponsor are not accepted": I provided a transactions list (during the last 6 months, I consistently maintained at least $50,000) concatenated with my bank statement from the previous stage in one PDF document.

- "Please prove your monthly income. In case you are unemployed, please explain how you will sustain your life in Thailand": I attached a PDF explaining that I have over $60,000 in savings and experience in poker and IT, but I currently don’t plan to work because I have enough money.

Despite meeting the official requirements, my application was rejected. I suspect it might be due to my unemployment status (even though it’s not a requirement for the Soft Power Visa) or my extensive travel history (despite the officer recommending the DTV visa).

Given that I’ve provided all the required documents, should I try applying at another consulate, or is there a high chance of being rejected again?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user faced a rejection of their DTV Soft Power Visa application in Ho Chi Minh City despite submitting required documents, including a significant bank balance, a treatment plan for dental work, and explanations of financial sustainability while unemployed. Comments from the community suggest that concerns over the user's unemployment status and mentioning poker as a source of income may have contributed to the rejection, alongside a history of extensive travel in Thailand. The user seeks advice on whether to apply at another consulate or risk another rejection.

I can’t see how you would expect to live for up to 5 years on $60,000 of savings plus paying for your medical treatment. Being unemployed and only having that amount of savings sounds very much like you are planning to work to live.

Haha poker. Poker is prohibited. Probably they thought you were a proffesional player as you did not work and did not have additional source of income.

It's most likely due to your "unemployed" status. I've come across many such situations as yours. Even if the applicant has enough savings, they are looking for applicants with a stable job or a regular source of income. They seem to think that people with regular income are less likely to overstay, or work illegally in Thailand. Whether it's a soft power or workcation, they are now asking for a "regular source of income".

Also, do not mention poker. If you mention a doing something that's illegal in Thailand, it's a sure shot way to get red flagged and rejected.

Did your treatment plan include fixed appointment dates for the next 6 months or so?

Your passport likely flagged with the ED visas and comment about back to back tourist visas etc

Collection of reasons for rejection for DTV :

DTV Soft Power Visa for medical treatment plan for 2 years too long to be trusted because ussuly it's takes much shorter time for dental treatment

- indicated that currently unemployed and have no income.

Additional context: long visa history

- "Please prove your monthly income. In case you are unemployed, please explain how you will sustain your life in Thailand": I attached a PDF explaining that I have over $60,000 in savings and experience in poker

Poker playing it's bad idea for official prove your monthly income

unfortunately, yes, these were all potential red flags, as well as any border runs without multiple days in other countries. It looks like a lot of scrambling to figure out ways to stay in the country, rather than anything completely legit.

A history of exemption abuse, poker, and no income definitely aren’t working in your favor… Immigration is now cracking down on all of these. As mentioned in another post, we’ll see more questionable profiles trying to get a DTV after being refused under exemptions—that’s just a logical progression. Rules will get stricter for everyone.

Poker? Why mention that? 🙄

I suspect you need to show how you will sustain yourself, even though you are not working show how you will obtain money but leave out the gambling if you try again

Leave gambling out of it

Wonder if it's due to the poker comment. Gambling is illegal in Thailand, so this might have been a red flag to them.

This is exactly what will put an end to the DTV…. Sorry you don’t have a job.

A job isn't really needed; however, they could always put up the minimum amount of funds to 1 million Baht or higher.

OP got 50k us$ which is way greater than 1 million baht

It’s not your travel history. I was told the same in January at DMK. Come in on the correct visa next time or you may not need let in. So I went to Hanoi last week and got the DTV. I probably would leave out the poker comment. Did you email them and ask them for a reason. Sometimes they will respond.

What makes you think it’s not related to his visa or travel history? If they suspect applicants of working in Thailand, that alone is a solid reason for rejection. Also, what an immigration officer suggests has little to do with the embassy’s decision.
