Is it acceptable to use a Thai bank account for proof of funds instead of a home country account?

Is it a mistake to use my Thai bank account to show proof of funds, instead of one from my home country? I’m aware it could highlight that I’ve essentially been living in Thailand for the past six months (on visa exemptions), and that I’ve had a Thai account for four years now (I’ve been on various visas). My passport stamps tell the same story, however.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Using a Thai bank account to show proof of funds for visa applications is generally acceptable, but it can raise concerns about your visa status and whether you have been working illegally in Thailand. While many users reported no issues when using a local account, some cautioned that it could prompt further scrutiny, especially if funds were earned within Thailand or if there are discrepancies with visa stamps showing extended stays. Supporting documentation about the source of the funds is often required, particularly if they are from outside Thailand.

Some DTV applications were rejected when using a Thai bank account.

You could contest the decision, but it raises questions about how the money entered the account & whether you have previously been working legally/illegally in Thailand.

Using a local bank account could simply prompt further scrutiny from the officer reviewing your paperwork. (Perhaps you were previously working legally, but now intend to obtain a DTV and continue working illegally.)

I made a deposit into a TransferWise (Wise) account to show funds.

I would be concerned about you working and living in Thailand on the wrong visa.

That will be your issue if you have one imo,

While loads of people have done it, they don't show a thai bank account receiving work funds while on a tourist visa.

That was my thought exactly. I have a Thai bank account. But I was receiving funds on a work visa. But I've since concluded my contract and my work permit/visa is being cancelled, so that I can apply for the DTV visa.

if you were on a work visa then you did the right things and you should be fine.

Those of you who said "as long as the funds came from outside Thailand".. but I have a Thai bank, and my funds came from inside Thailand. But I was on a work visa. Set to be cancelled this month. So the funds will only be savings going forward. I guess I can take pics of my passport with the appropriate visa stamps to prove it. So in this circumstance, is it an issue?

Depends where the money is coming from. If you’ve been getting paid in Thailand, from Thailand it would be red flags. But , I used a Thai bank account all legit and it was no issue, but they did ask follow up questions to make sure I wasn’t working illegally.

That's a big fat zero on the scale of what makes a difference.

I used a thai bank account. The only additional questions where proof of where those funds came from outside thailand. I had to show transfers from us accounts etc to prove I wasn't earning money in thailand

exactly! they juts want to see that the funds came form outside of Thailand. If the funds were coming from a Thai business account, then of course they’d be very suspicious

I used thai bank account and had no issues

Anonymous participant 927 Were you on a work visa receiving funds or did you just transfer in from your home country?

@Joe *********
I had money transfered from my home country. I was previously on an ED, then tourist visa when I left Thailand to apply for a dtv in taiwan

No issues

It doesn't matter. The important parts are that you have had more than 500k, for as long as that particular embassy requires, and that the account is in your name only.

At some point, they may ask for a picture of every page from your passport anyway, so why not 😅

Thailand doesn't care where the account is, only that you have unhindered access to it at all times.
