Small question: my son (17yo) just got a new passport from our embassy. How long does he have to register it at immigration? He is on student visa, valid till May. Does he need to go there himself? Or can I do it for him?

TLDR : Answer Summary
When a person with a student visa receives a new passport, they must register it at the immigration office where their visa extension was issued. They need to bring both the old and new passports to the office, and they are generally required to go in person to complete this process.

he needs to take the old passport and the new passport to the immigration office that issued the extension he's on and get the stamps moved to the new passport

Unless I'm mistaken he's got to go on his own.

In my case a Non O retieement extension. I go to my country and get a new passport. Reenter with 2 passports. Do i need to go to the immigration who issued my extension straight away? I did plan to stay in Bangkok a few weeks before comming back to Chiang Mai. I got my extension in Chiang Mai.
