I have a work permit but my passport is expiring next year. So, I plan to renew my passport from my home country as I will be going there in a few months.
I wanted to understand that when I come back to Thailand, do I just need to hand them over both my new and old passport(with the relevant stamps) or is something else also needed?

TLDR : Answer Summary
When returning to Thailand with a new passport after renewing it, you need to present both your old and new passports at immigration. The old passport should have the relevant stamps. Additionally, upon your return, it's necessary to visit the immigration office that issued your work extension and complete a form titled "TRANSFER STAMP TO NEW PASSPORT" to move your visa to the new passport.
You would use both passports to enter. Then once you're back home you would take both of your passports to your immigration office that issued your work extension and have them move it to your new passport.
the transfer of stamps will be handled by my employer once I am back in Thailand. So, having an old passport(with the cancelled stamp from my home country) would not make the thailand’s stamps void as long as I give thailand immigration both of my passports, right?
no, as long as you got a re-entry permit before you left, you can use both passports to enter under your old stamp. The only thing that would invalidate the old stamp is if you left without a re-entry permit or if you got a new visa in the new passport.
