I'll be leaving Thailand this November and won't be coming back until August next year with a tourist visa.. I just received a new passport ,, Do I need to go to immigration to change my student visa from the old passport to the new one even though I won't be coming back again on that visa ?? Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is currently on a student visa in Thailand that will expire in February next year and plans to leave the country in November, returning only in August next year with a tourist visa. They recently obtained a new passport and are inquiring if they need to update their student visa to the new passport despite not returning to Thailand on that visa. The discussion highlights the importance of verifying if the current visa is a regular student visa or an extension and the necessity to cancel any extensions before leaving the country.

If it’s an extension you need to cancel it before you leave get a letter from the school stating when you finish classes and you have to leave on that date

no extension whatsoever .. just a normal ed visa

you need to look in your passport and read if there’s a stamp that says extension of stay you need to cancel that , most ED visas get extended every 90 days

Are you on the 90 day Non-ED visa that you received from an embassy outside of Thailand or you received from immigration by converting from another type of entry? Because if you are still on this, a visa cannot be cancelled or moved to a new passport.

Or are you on an extension of stay based on education? If your most recent stamp says "extension of stay" then you are on an extension. If you are on an extension you should have it moved to your new passport. And then about a week before you leave Thailand you need to get documentation from your school that says you will finish studying on xxxx date, and take the paperwork to immigration to get your extension cancelled and then a new stamp allowing you to stay until that date.

If you haven't gotten any extensions then just show both passports when you leave. But since ED visas are for 90 days, and you said yours expires in February, I find it hard to believe you're on an ED visa.

that's it.. no hassle with immigration because of a lack of a stamp or visa nor here or in the next country I'm visiting ?

the next country won't care. And even if Thailand cares, the problems will be next time you return to Thailand, not as you're leaving.

What issues might I face when returning to Thailand ?

if you have not been doing the 90 day extensions that are required with an ED visa, even though it is good for a year, with the documents your school gives you showing you are regularly attending classes, and making satisfactory progress, then you could have problems, and even be refused entry. A new passport won't matter, as facial recognition and your fingerprint gives immigration your full history.

You need to make sure the Ed visa is cancelled.

above my pay grade. I just know my school didn't bother to do it and I had a big hassle and got shaken down for a fine because of it later.
