How does the Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) work for entry and stay in Thailand?

I have one simple question about the DTV if anyone can help please. From what I read here it seems you have 1 visit per year up to 180 days, NOT 180 days total stay per year allowing you to leave and come back?

Maybe I’m reading this wrong, it seems a little contradictory…

TLDR : Answer Summary
The Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) allows multiple entries into Thailand, with each entry allowing a stay of 180 days. After entering, you can leave the country and re-enter to gain another 180-day duration. This process can be repeated for up to five years, with options to extend the stay for an additional 180 days during each entry. There are mixed interpretations about the extent of entries allowed and the process for extensions.

That correct Andy 180 days same as most countries that have introduced this visa, after that you are regarded as living in Thailand and there's other visas to cover that. Then you stay out 1 year and come back and digital around again.

Hi, has there been any clarification on the Soft Power Option ie, do you have to be enrolled in a course every time you get a 180 day extension? Thanks for your help 😊

Unknown at this point.

Anyone know if they would check with your employer? just curious as I want to apply for the DTV but I really don't want my employer knowing about it, all they need to know is I am working remotely as per contract?
Matt ******
@Steven ******
I can't see them calling your employer unless your application seemed dodgy
Ryan *******
180. Day per entry. Leave for 5 days check out Malaysia and go back
Steve *******
@Ryan ******
Dont even have to leave for 5 days. Leave and re-enter the same day, or extend for a further 180 days in Country

Everyone can just guess or surmise at the moment, we should actually wait to someone with the DTV actually tries to do it and is successful, until then it is pure speculation on what might/ could happen.
Frank-Steven ***********
@Rob *********
Some things we know for a fact. Other things vary between consulates. Some things we indeed don't fully know, yet. But if everybody followed your advice, nobody would ever get the DTV and we would never know. Think about it. 😉

I was just saying, a lot of people are saying what is going to happen, I was just saying in the fullness of time it will all play out, personally it doesn’t affect me in the slightest, I just don’t want to see people going off half cocked and possibly regret it, this visa is still in it’s infancy and the Thai Government has a long history off backflips and stuff ups, that can’t be disputed.
Frank-Steven ***********
@Rob *********
Agreed. If not urgently needed now, maybe a good idea to wait a little longer for more clarity. In fact, I just published a separate post on that very matter. 🙂

@Frank-Steven **********
thank you , that was all I was eluding too.
Brian *******
its multiple entry for 5 years up to 6 months at a time
Bart **************
Correct. There's no limited days per year, only per visit. Just come back again when you leave.

You could technically also extend your stay but that's rather pointless as it appears to cost 10k baht instead of the usual 1900 for that visa. With multiple entries allowed, that's what you'd use to stay longer.
Ivan ************
@Ba**
it's very possible the extensions will be 1,900. The announcement in the Royal Gazette stated the visa fee was 10,000 but made no provision for a different price for extensions, and there has been nothing official to suggest they will cost that. I suspect this was misreporting at the start. Siam Legal reckon 1,900:

@Ivan ***********
Siam Legal was exactly the source stating 10,000 at first, convincing me because I too figured that it should be 1900. If they now say 1,900, then they've changed it. That is indeed a very good sign!

However, there were some other sources also saying it's 10k. Several of the senior members in this group say they've read it in the conditions.
Henrik *****
Nobody knows for sure yet, how to understand it, and how it will be implemented.
Bob *********
If you read the photo you attached it says "per visit", not per year.
Andy ********

@Bob ********
yes that does make sense in its literal meaning!
Stephen ********
I don't see anywhere where it says only 1 visit per year. so, come and go as you please and get stamped in for 180 days per entry until the 5 years is up.
Glenn *****
Could be wrong but the way I read it it was two 180 day multiple entries within five years
Zoe ******
@Glenn ****
that was my understanding but everyone jumped on my throat saying it’s multiple 180 days within 5 years😒
Pui *****
@Zoe *****
it's no longer up to debate. The visa itself has been posted and the government has issued plenty of information indicating it is a multi entry 5 year visa granting 180 days each time, and extendable once per entry for 180 more days. So after 360 days, you need to leave and reenter to reactivate the visa.
Glenn *****
@Pui ****
could very well be true but no one should trust the durability of government pronouncements. You can do 90 reports online until you can't, you can do combination methods until you can't, you don't need a TM 30 after an international travel until you do.....
Ivan ************
@Gl***
this isn't it. It's unlimited entries for the life of the visa (5 years).
Glenn *****
@Ivan ***********
here is another opinion. On the internet so it must be correct
Ivan ************
@Gl***
that site is not official anything, it's just a site designed to capture search traffic. It doesn't say anything about it being limited to two entries within the five years anyway.

The government have been clear at every point it is a multiple-entry visa. What you describe is a double-entry visa, they used have these but this is not that.

Siam Legal have a run down that seems more correct:

Reidar **********
And as we currently understand, one can get a 60 day visa exemption free,+ 30 day extension at 1900 bth. Plus 2 border runs, + 2 air runs .. visa cost at 1900× 4 = 7,600 bdt. And one gets to enjoy different cultures, not a bad deal, if the Thai government .. wakes up and says WTF ?? .. Happy to live in Vietnam. Chao.
Steve *******
@Reidar *********
There's no limit on entries by air, with or without a visa or land border entries with a valid visa. It's only 2 land border entries per calander year without a valid visa that restrictions apply to
Rogerio ******
@Steve ******
well technically i've done lots of visits to TH by air back to back with a week or two in between, and got told I should get a tourist visa "next time". So I wouldn't say its guaranteed to be 'no limit' for entries by air. I suppose you can do it until told otherwise.
Steve *******
@Rogerio *****
I didn't say it was guaranteed entry but technically there's no law setting a limit to entries by air. ALL entries are at the discretion of Thai Immigration
Will *****
@Reidar *********
How many VN border runs can you do on their 90 days tourist e-visa?
Reidar **********
@Will ****
Unlimited .. done 8 so far, never any issues, both land and air.
Steve *******
@Will ****
There's no 90 day tourist evisa, the tourist evisa is 60 days
Reidar **********
@Steve ******
90 day visa single or multiple if we are talking about Vietnam visa

Read this to wrap your head around it:

Look here to actually see a the DTV visa:

Check this, if you care for the pure facts written and published in Thai law:

***************************************************
John ********
You get stamped in 180 days for each entry. You can enter and get 180 days, leave Thailand a week later and enter again and get 180 days again on entry
Stuart *********
It’s a multiple entry visa. On each entry you get a stamp for 180 days. Leave and come back and you get another 180 days.

Rinse and repeat for 5 years.
Frank-Steven ***********
Todd *********
@Frank-Steven **********
I like it. It’s basically as

discussed- a 6 residency visa for 10k.

Truly wish the govt publicized this well… it’s one of the easiest and cheapest long term visa on 🌏
Frank-Steven ***********
@Todd ********
If the DTV is actually suitable as a “residence visa” remains to be seen in practice. We don’t know what supporting proof will be required at re-entry or at an optional extension in-country. But with a certain degree of likelihood effectively, yes.
Ivan ************
@Frank-******
from what the MFA has been saying so far, everything points to that they accept people can leave and come back immediately. I was wondering myself on this point, whether they wouldn't want people doing this, but everything they have put out about it, or when they have been asked, they have said yes you can do border bounces with it and get another 180 days.
Frank-Steven ***********
@Ivan ***********
Indeed they have. I was more referring to potential proof if conditions are still met. That could either mean still being enrolled at a soft power class (that would fall many people on the foot) or still having remote work and the money still in the savings account. I wouldn’t be surprised if that would surprise people thinking they would be fine having either only at the time of applying for the DTV.
Ivan ************
@Frank-******
they do mention possibly having to verify the financial proof for extensions, although it was in the section about following spouse visas. More likely to have to do that at an extension in country than arriving at a border I suspect, they don't tend to check very much at the borders.
Aaron ******
It is a multi-entry visa good for 5 year. You can leave and enter as you want.

Each time you enter you get 180 days.

And on each entry you can extend another 180 days for a total of 360 before you have to leave.
