What is the 180 rule for the DTV in Thailand and how soon can I return after leaving?

Been waiting for the DTV, so happy it’s finally here but I can’t see any mention of what the 180 rule is.

Leave Thailand on day 179.

That’s easy.

But when can I come back? Is it “x” amount of days, weeks, months?

Cannot find that information anywhere. 😱

TLDR : Answer Summary
The 180 rule regarding the DTV (Digital Nomad Visa) allows holders to stay in Thailand for 180 days per entry. There is no requirement to wait a specific period before re-entering the country; you can return immediately after exiting, although some users express concerns about potential scrutiny from immigration authorities. Additionally, the visa can be extended for another 180 days for a fee. However, specifics about the application process and requirements are still uncertain, as the DTV's full details are yet to be clearly outlined.

It's 180 days in the calendar year, it does not have to be a contiguous time period, so if you are coming and going, count them carefully.

thanks Graham!

@Doug *******
It's 180 days per entry regardless of when or how many
Alan ******
At the end of the day, you are only touristy 180 Days, not a retired, married, or working resident, there's a big diff
Brian ********
Anyone who says they know actually doesn't. Even Embassy officials are unsure of how to manage it. It's a wait and see kind of situation. Is it 180 days total with the option of a 180 day extension over 5 years? Do you get 180 days every time you come in? Does it tick off days? There is so much gray right now I think people should let others be guinea pigs for a while and see what happens.
Lee ***********
It's a little blurred, but clearly says 10,000tb for a five year visa. 180 days + 180 days extension, then must leave. Return on the same 5 year visa, thus starting the process over again, guess this break means your not a permanent resident. Nowhere does it say pay another 10,000tb for each 180 days. Remember Thailand are trying to attract people not turn them away.
Graham ******
@Lee **********
The fact you are on a Visa means you do not have permanent residency. Many expats never leave Thailand (on 12 month extensions of stay) but do not have permanent residency.
Bob *********
You pay another 10,000 baht to come back for another 180 in the same year. You must prove you have 500,000 baht in a bank somewhere in the world and have a freelance job with proof of work somehow
Paul *******
@Kami *****
thanks...yes, I.m reading more about it and see the money can be outside of Thailand.👍

Hey
@Bob ********
, I know this type of visa is just in the works now, and a lot is unclear. I looked at the posted screen shot of requirements.( and other articles posted in online newspapers) This particular screen shot does mention the required 500,000bt bank requirement, and yes, it doesnt say it must be in a Thai bank. You mentuoned the bank statement( with equivilancy of 500Bt) can be in any bank around the world. Is this speculation, or did you read elsewhere that the money doesnt need to be in a Thai bank?

I.m not trying to give you an agruement, its just I.ve had a hard time getting a bank account opened in Thailand. Just checking to see if you saw previously that the money can be in a ban outside of Thailand...Thanks for any insight.
Graham ******
@Bob ********
No, the 500B is a one time cost for the initial DTV or for an in country extension, not a border bounce. It's a multi-entry Visa and meant to be used that way.
Steve ****
So 5 years, 180 days per visit? Does this mean that same strategy using the METV would work with the DTV.
Chris ************
@Kool ******
1900 Baht per extension.

500k don't need to be fixed.

No. It is not 10k baht each re-entry.

Brandon ************
@Kool ******
the graphic clearly says 180 days per entry though.
Kool *******
@Steve ***
no. It is good for just 180 days, at which time you can extend it for another 180 days for bt10,000 without leaving, and as long as you maintain the bt500,000 in your bank account. Leave, and come back doing it again for five years, costing bt10,000 every 180 days.

Just saw this .. hope i am not infringing copyright

No visa type works like that it forbids you to come back within any amount of time. As you also couldn't find any such clause, we can conclude that you can come back immediately.
Todd *********
Can't find it anywhere because it doesn't exist anywhere yet. But coming soon!
Diane ******
Im guessing its going to be like visa runs with tourist visa, you can come back even after 1 day, but Thai immigration at airport are going to scrutinize you or deny your entry if you do it too often?
Goel ********
@Diane *****
hey i have similar question

If I travel for initial 3 months and exit Thailand and if I re enter after 1 month so I would can stay for next 3 months - or 6 months i.e my counter of stay will start from 0 or 3 months?
Diane ******
@Graham *****
you need to stop taking everything they say so literally here. A 1-year Non-ED is also a "long-term" visa however I know so many people still faced difficulties getting in in the last few years as certain nationalities started abusing it, circumstances can change, nothing is black and white, and not everything is done by the book in developing countries.
Graham ******
@Diane *****
a 90 day Non-O Visa is a long stay Visa so why would 180 day not be?
Diane ******
@Graham *****
Depends on how u define” long stay”, at the end of the day, TIT, we shall see.
Graham ******
@Diane *****
METV is not a long stay Visa, DTV is, there's no need for a change
Diane ******
@Graham *****
In theory yes, I’m hopeful but I’ve heard plenty of peopel had a hard time with immigration with METV, but like you said this is not a TV so maybe things will change.
Graham ******
@Diane *****
It's a long term Visa not a Tourist Visa so you will not be subject to that scrutiny as that is what it is intended for
Radost **************************
@Diane *****
how they can you deny? You have a 5 year visa
Vin *********
@Diane *****
No. That's why it is multiple entry....
Kano *******
Can't apply as of yet as there is no section for required documents contrary to existing DTV visa section of Thai embassies of neighboring countries

you leave after you've been in Thailand for 179 days and don't come back until the next year.
Tin **********
@Brandon ***********
how u reset tax
Brandon ************
@Tin *********
your entry stamp will reset if you do a border bounce yes. Your tax status will not reset. It's a combination of all the days you're in the country from January 1 until December 31
Tin **********
@Brandon ***********
can u do air visa run will it reset
Brandon ************
@Tin *********
179 days is the maximum you can spend in Thailand before you become a tax resident. But any income you derive from Thailand is taxable regardless of your tax residency. Best to consult a tax specialist though as I'm only a certified Facebook expert 🤪
Zoe *******
I'm just about to start the online application but I'm already in Thailand. Do we need to be in our home country at time of application?
Kim *********
@Brandon ***********
It was actually because Ting Tong said you have to leave Thailand (or go to immi) to apply for an online visa that I asked you about the vpn but you say they don't check but they do say you can not apply inside Thailand which you actually can - either with a vpn which is redundant since they apparently don't check your ip or just do it anyway since they still don't check
Brandon ************
@Kim ********
I haven't seen anything that said you are required to apply from your home country. Also the evisa system doesn't track your IP so a VPN does nothing
Kim *********
@Brandon ***********
but they say you must apply from your home country - right? that's where the vpn comes in. I have never been asked to provide "proof of current location" and the plane ticket really can't be an issue since you write your home address

Might be me being thick so I’ll check…

They want you to provide proof of a plane ticket before you get the visa approval??
Brandon ************
@Kim ********
one of the questions on the visa application is "proof of current location" and you also need to provide a plane ticket from where you are applying to Thailand.

A VPN doesn't matter, the evisa application does not track your location.
Kim *********
@Brandon ***********
sorry to butt in but if the home country thai embassy uses evisa and a vpn is connected to your home country why is that not a valid combination?
Stephan ******
@Ting *****
Thai Embassy Vientiane may be offering it, as they have removed location evidence on their infographic, so it may be possible to make an appointment there and get the DTV in Laos -

yes. There's no word yet on if any of the nearby embassies in SE Asia will be offering the DTV or if you have to return home though.

ahh, my apologies. I was just thinking about visas in general when reading the comments. So she has to leave the country 👍🙏

DTV will not be offered in Thailand.

@Zoe ******
you cannot make an online application while in Thailand , you need to visit an immigration office or leave the country to apply outside of Thailand. What visa do you have now and how long have you been in Thailand ????
Brandon ************
It's a multiple entry visa like any multiple entry visa. You get 180 days permission to stay every time you enter Thailand until the visa expires. You don't have to stay out any amount of time
Lee-Ann *******

I think poster means, when they do leave is there a minimum requirement before entering back
