Can I leave Thailand during my 180-day stay on a multiple-entry visa and return without penalty?

Hi, I have a question about DTV, which I know is new and we have limited experience with it. I am a Danish citizen and applied via the Royal Thai Embassy in Copenhagen, which was quite helpful.

I operate a small ecommerce business which I manage via my computer and internet access, and got my visa easily and quickly. The question that the Embassy was not completely clear about was, when I now take a block of 180 days in Thailand, can I, for example, go on a business trip to China or home to spend Christmas in Denmark within the 180 days, or will it be perceived as an interruption of the 180 days, so I have to leave Thailand for at least 180 days, to re-enter. Visa has a wording that says: "No. of entry: Multiple"

TLDR : Answer Summary
A Danish citizen with a multiple-entry visa (DTV) to Thailand inquired about exiting and re-entering the country during their 180-day stay. Several commenters clarified that the 180-day stay limit resets upon leaving and re-entering Thailand, allowing for multiple entries and exits without the need to stay out of the country for 180 days. Each new entry grants another 180 days in Thailand.

My understanding is that the visa is valid for stay up to a max of 180 days with multiple entries during those 180 days after which you would need to leave Thailand and re-enter for a further and successive 180 days etc up to the validity of your visa of 5 years.

multiple which means come and go 500 times if you want in the 5 years. Each entry is 180 days. If you stay 3 days. No problem. It resets when you renter for new 180 days.

Multiple entry so come and go as you please 🙏

It makes no difference, come and go as you please. Every new entry starts a new 180days. And you can exit and enter same day if you so choose. There are NO restrictions on this and you don’t have to leave at 180 days you can get 1 x 180 extension per entry

no, I was told by immigration at the airport in BKK that the visa is valid for 180 days so if you enter 1 Sept 2024 you are allowed entry for 180 days or approx 6 months and you can come and go as you please within those 180 days but a new 180 days does not kick in every time you re-enter the country so you enter the first time you get 180 days after which you must leave and then re-enter for a further 180 days for the validity of your 5 year DTV visa

ok, well try it and see, the way it’s been explained is that every new entry has to have a stamp, and that stamp is 180 days.

Maybe
@Tod ********
can clarify either way as he knows the visa system better than anyone else here in my opinion.

Or you could get a 180 day extension at the Immigration, so only need to leave once every 360 days.

Your 180 days is a limit on how long you can stay in Thailand. It will reset when you leave and come back, you can leave and come back when you want, you don’t have to stay out of Thailand for 180 days.

Or you could get a 180 day extention at the Immigration, so only need to leave once every 360 days.

You can come and go at will. Each entry gets you stamped in for 180 days but there's no requirement to remain for 180 days
