TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is currently on a tourist extension in Thailand and is seeking guidance on transitioning to a marriage visa due to their marriage to a Thai citizen and having sufficient funds in the bank. Several commenters suggest applying directly for a Non-O visa based on marriage at the immigration office, instead of pursuing the 60-day family extension. They also discuss the option of leaving Thailand to apply for a Non-O visa at an embassy, with the potential to simplify future visa processes if the user increases their bank balance to meet retirement visa requirements. There are nuances regarding processing times and regulations, particularly concerning switching visa types within Thailand.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
  • Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
  • For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
  • Explore recent discussions by using the Non-O Retirement Visa tag in the search box at the top of the page.

ok guys thanks for the info......so now it looks like it might be easier to go to say savanaket stay a few days and get 1, is that correct, as has been said here they might not even change 30 day tourist extension to 60 day marriage ectension

Yes there is. Go to the immigration office and apply for it.

BTW. You get a “visa” when outside the country. It allows you to enter the country.

Once you’re there you can be allowed to stay longer than the stamp you got when entering.

That is called an “extension of stay”.

If you are on the 30 day tourist extension you probably do not have enough time (Phuket its 15 working days) to convert to 90 day non-o.

They no longer allow conversion from tourist stamp/extension to 60 day Thai family to 90 day non-o .

So either leave and return as a tourist and get it started right away, which depending on your history could be problematic.

OR best path leave and apply for the 90 day non-o based on being married to a Thai at an embassy.

Then enter on that 90 day visa and then apply for the 1 year extension.

You might find it easier (if you have the means) to increase your 400k to 800k and apply for the non-o and extension based on retirement. Much less paperwork and you're not tied to your marriage for your extensions (or if you're wife should pass). Less paperwork and easier process.

so if say i go out of country and get non O how long after that would it take to get marriage visa,

once again guys thanks for the helpfull advice

@Robert ******
, if you have a 90-day non-O, you will stay on that for about 75 days depending once again on the immigration office you are dealing with. You will then bring a stack of paperwork for review, if accepted they will extend the 90-day for 30 more days to review your marriage. After 30 days, they will either extend the non-O for 11 months or they will deny the marriage extension and you'll need to leave the country. Every immigration office has different requirements and interprets the policies differently. Which immigration office are you dealing with?

the non-O IS the marriage visa.

aah ok i thought it was a sort of 90 day bridging visa so you could then apply for marriage visa i will off to immigration first thing monday as i have all relevant paperwork to show except last bank statement and letter from bank dated monday .......... thanks for clearing that up

it is possible to change your tourist visa to non-o visa within Thailand, provided you meet certain conditions and follow the proper procedures.

If you already have the 400,000 why are you even bothering applying for the 60 day family extension? Just apply directly for the 90 day non-O based on marriage to Thai. Go to your immigration office and ask them for their handout of requirements to convert to the marriage visa.

Many immigration don't do 60 days extension anymore. Phuket, Khon Kaen, Udon Thani. I think BKK still do it. But most you can convert to Non O.

most of those offices still offer the 60 day extension, but not if you have entered visa exempt and then applied for a tourist extension.

for the first time in many years i actually entered on a 60 day e visa

No, it doesn't matter. Most offices don't do 60 days, period. Some since the new 60 days visa exempt, and some since 2025. They only do 60+30, no 60+60 nor 60+30+60.

thanks brandon appreciated i did go to immigration and was told not possible, that is why i posted on here to get some one like yourself with a vast knowledge of the rules to start me in right direction

@Robert ******
Did they say why it's not possible? It should be. But each immigration office gets to set their own policies. So if they refuse to do it, you won't have any recourse. It's possible in almost every immigration office in Thailand.

@Robert ******
, it is possible depending on the immigration office you are dealing with. I just converted a 60-day exempt on a 30-day extension into a 90-day non-O that will be converted to a marriage extension in May.
