How can I switch from a retirement visa to a marriage visa in Thailand?

The easiest way to switch from retirement to marriage extension? I have a 1-year Non-immigrant "O" visa issued last December from the U.S. In March, paid 1900 Thb and became a retirement extension. 90 days again in June.

I'd like to switch to marriage before September 12. I'd rather not keep 800,000 when 400,00 will satisfy the authorities.

I use the Chonburi immigration office. I've heard several farangs run the gamut from easy to a real pain in the rear.

Any advice would be appreciated.

TLDR : Answer Summary
To switch from a Non-immigrant "O" retirement visa to a marriage extension in Thailand, you should first check the specific requirements given by your immigration office. Generally, you will need your passport, a copy of your previous extension, your wife's Thai ID and marriage certificate, proof of the bank deposit of at least 400,000 THB, your wife present with you at the office, and potentially several photographs and application forms. The new extension will start from the date you apply, not when the current one expires. It's recommended to apply 30 days or fewer before your existing extension expires and to consult with the immigration office for a checklist of requirements.

Okay, IF you are going to change the reason for your extension BEFORE this current one runs out you need to go in and cancel it and then immediately apply for a new yearly extension based on a new reason and the new extension will start from the date you applied. You will need to meet the seasoning requirements on the old extension for how ever long you're on it before you change the reason.

IF you are going to wait until next year when this current extension comes due you don't cancel anything and just apply for a new extension based on marriage when you have 30 days or less left on your current one.

I doubt Jomtien would let you cancel/change the reason for your extension from retirement to marriage BEFORE the 3 months time when you go back and show the 800k baht in the bank BUT that is between you and them.

GO to the immigration office with your thai wife, talk to them about what you want to do and get the hand out listing the requirements document-wise as far as what you need to apply for a marriage extension. They might make you wait out this first year and apply for the marriage extension next year

It's getting late, so I'm going to close commenting.

1. You SHOULD BE able to convert a one year extension of stay based on retirement to a one year extension of stay based on marriage to a Thai national easily. Each immigration office has their own requirements, but expect the following :

1 Your passport AND a copy of

- Your data page

- Your most recent extension of stay

- Your departure card

2. Your wife's Thai ID card AND a copy of both the front and back side of the ID card

3. Your original marriage certificate AND a double sided couple of the marriage certificate

4. An updated Kor Ror 2 (being asked at most immigration offices)

5. The TM30 filed at the immigration office

6. Your wife physically next to you

7. Proof that the 400K THB was seasoned in a Thai bank account for TWO months

8. 2x passport pictures

9. The application forms

10. MAYBE a picture of you and your wife standing in front of the door to the house with the door number (or address box) clearly showing.

11. 1,900 THB processing fee.

You *WILL GET* an under consideration stamp. Expect a visit to your house from the local immigration office, and pictures taken of you and your wife in all rooms of the house. This is free, there is no money expected (and if there is, decline). When you close out your under consideration stamp, you may be asked to show your bank book again, to confirm the 400K THB is still in the bank. Different immigration offices ask for different things. They *MAY* ask for:

- Copies of all pages of your passport

- The property owner's bluebook or ID card

- Pictures of you and your wife in rooms around he house (already taken)

- A witness that you and her are married

*ASK* for the handout at your local immigration office :)

You just change the reason for your extension. You have to meet all the requirements of the new extension and the new extension starts from the date you apply, not from the end of your current extension when change the reason for the extension. Go ask them for the list of requirements for extension for marriage at that immigration office. If you meet all the requirements you should have no issue. Apply 30 days or less from when current extension expires. Some offices allow you apply 45 days in advance but remember when change you lose days due to new extension starting from the application date.

what does:

> 90 days again in June.

mean? Is this when you file a 90 day report (which has nothing to do with maintaining your extension of stay), or when your extension of stay is due?
