Looking for advice on having an extension of stay transferred to a new passport when re-entring with a multi-re-entry stamp in an old passport.

I have a Non-Imm B (BOI) with two-year extensions of stay, but I plan to get a new passport in Australia in February - it's easier to do it there vs. Thailand. My Thai legal employer tells me that I should show both passports (old and new) to the Immigration officer on arrival at Chiang Mai International Airport and ensure I get stamped into Thailand in the new passport with my current extension of stay.

Is this correct? I've read various other reports about needing to go to immigration for stamp swaps, but can I do it on arrival at the Immigration counter? I know the other requirements to change passport numbers with my Work Permit, etc.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When re-entering Thailand with a multi-reentry stamp in an old passport and a new passport, it's important to show both passports to the Immigration officer upon arrival. You should be stamped into Thailand using your new passport, and it is recommended to visit an immigration office afterwards to officially transfer your extension of stay from the old passport to the new one. While some users suggest carrying both passports for a smooth process, confirming these procedures with Thai immigration prior to travel can help ensure compliance with current regulations.

Getting a new Aus passport takes 2 weeks in Bangkok and is easy I just got mine last week.

Go to immigration and get the visa transferred or just travel with both passports.

It's not a big issue.

Probably best to ask Thai immigration before you go. So many armchair experts here your bound to get a lot of I'll informed crap . Not the best place to ask for important info.

Dont forget to notify your banks.

I renewed my Belgian passport at the Belgium embassy in Bangkok. The embassy gave me a letter to give to immigration which stated the reason for a new passport being issued.

As previously stated your Bank passport is linked to your passport from your country. Take your new passport to your bank to update the information.

A bank password is what the banks call it. In western banks they called it a bank book which you updated at your bank either by a teller or ATM. Most banks in western countries do not use them any more. However here in Thailand it is much more important. If it is lost or stolen the bank will require you report to police in order for you to get a new bank passport. You will have to have with you for almost all transactions you make at the bank along with the passport from your country. I was at Bangkok Bank the other day and I was told I needed a new passport because mine was on its last page. You would not believe how much paperwork I had to sign in order to get a new bank passport

strange because I have 3 bank accounts and three bank passports and I have never used any of them for anything.

I use Bangkok Bank. Any transactions I want to do at my bank I have to show both bank passport and passport. You have to show your bank passport and copies when you renew your retirement visa. To set up mobile banking on your phone you need to show these. Setting up automatic debit from your account for paying utilities. These are just a few examples

Never had a problem using my Bangkok Bank and SCB cards before - ATMs and tap'n pay, but I usually try to use cash - although that is getting harder in Australia.

You can use the old one when you get back from your country but you have to show them both when you come back to Thailand

Then go to the immigration office to get the stamp in the old one put in the new passport

agree, the drop dead date for getting the stamps transfered at immigration is prior to the next 90 day reporting, and the TM30 after arival should reflect the new number.

That is exactly the right way how to "solve" this. Come back with both passports and then within a few days after retunring go to the Immigration office to get your visa transferred. Pretty straightforward. ๐Ÿ˜

Staple your old passport to the new passport. Show them to the immigration officer at the time of entering the country. Until the last date of your visa, just renew it normally.
