Will Thai immigration accept my extension of stay in my old passport when I enter Thailand with a new passport?

German passport valid until June 2025, extention of stay (Retirement) valid until Nov 30, 2023.

I will leave on a re-entry in June for a 6 week vacation in Europe. In Germany I want to get a new 10 year passport, because it is much easier and cheaper.

When I return to Thailand, I will enter with the new passport, but still have the old one with me.

My concerns:

1.) Will immigration at the airport accept my extention/re-entry from the old passport ?

2.) What stamp will I get in the new passport ?

I understand that I can transfer the extention from the old to the new passport at my immigration where I live. Thank you.

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user with a German passport valid until June 2025 and an extension of stay (Retirement) valid until November 30, 2023, seeks clarification on entering Thailand with a new passport after a six-week vacation in Europe. Concerns include: 1) Whether immigration will accept the extension/re-entry from the old passport and 2) What stamp will be issued in the new passport. Responses advise carrying both passports to immigration, ensuring the extension is properly transferred, and obtaining possible confirmation from the embassy regarding the new passport.

I tried to get visa stamp moved from one passport to another in Jomtein. They refused because old passport had not been officially cancelled. (Still valid for three months). May not be the same in other offices.

My new passport has a note on the last page indicating the passport it replaced. I am wondering if that would suffice.

, it would be fine

Enter Thailand with both passports. Be sure to check entry stamp is with the re-entry permit for Non-O, the same duration as your extension before you leave the passport control upon entry. Once in Thailand, go to the immigration office that issued your extension to move stamps. You don't need the letter to move stamps from your old one to your new passport when you get a new passport in your home country.

when you say "entry stamp is with the re-entry permit" you mean "IN LINE/SYNC with re-entry permit ref to dates" and not actually in the same (i.e. old) passport, right ?

All clear now. Thank you so much !!!

, You will be stamped until the date on your extension in your old passport, using the re-entry permit also in your old passport. Your re-entry permit and extension should have the same date. When you enter on a re-entry permit, the stamp would say "Non-RE" instead of "Non-O".

thank you. But the non-re stamp should be in the new or old passport ?

When you return to Thailand, carry both of the passports with you.

Show the Thai Immigration Officer upon your arrival the One year extension of stay stamped in your Old passport...

The Thai Immigration Officer will stamp you into Thailand in your new passport for the time remaining on the extension of stay stamp in your old passport... November 30, 2023.

Hopefully your New German Passport will come with a letter stating that it's a replacement of your current passport.

IF not, get your German Embassy in Bangkok issue such a letter to Thai Immigration asking them to accept your New passport.

Go to your local Thai Immigration office and ask them to transfer your extension of stay into the New passport.

Be sure to have a re-entry permit in your passport when you leave Thailand.

the passport will NOT come with a letter that it is a replacement. How does that change the approach? Would it be easier to get the passport in Thailand from the embassy instead of from abroad ?

it's up to you. You stated that it's easier to get a NEW passport in Germany

yes, but I will have NO letter to show when I enter with a new virgen passport from abroad. Would it still be feasible to enter with the NEW passport and show the extention/reentry from the OLD passport and get stamped in until the end of the extention? Can the extention later be transferred to the new passport WITHOUT the letter ? Thank you.
