Passport going to expire early next year.. 1 yr Extension of stay ends mid Aug. Planning on returning to home country (canada) in April along with getting a re-entry stamp, and then apply for new passport while in home country. Questiion/guidance: Once i get my new passport, will the previous extension to stay/re-entry permit still be valid when I re-enter the country at the bkk airiport in June ? Or is there some formal process in place that needs to occur for this transfer inorder to retain and thereafter apply for a following extension when due.

TLDR : Answer Summary
When you re-enter Thailand with a new passport after your current extension of stay ends, yes, your extension will still be valid. You need to carry both your current and new passports to show to the Thai Immigration Officers. After returning, it's necessary to visit the local Thai Immigration office to transfer your extension of stay stamp from your old passport to your new one.
totally WILL be valid, when you come back show BOTH passports at passport control and they will stamp you in on the new passport until your current extension expires
THEN
once you're here, go to the immigration office wiht BOTH passports and they'll move the relevant extension/re-entry stamps to the new passport
Simple answer... YES , you can. WHEN you return to Thailand , carry BOTH your CURRENT and NEW PASSPORT to show Thai Immigration Officers upon arrival into Thailand.
AND after you return to Thailand, visit your local Thai Immigration office and ask them to TRANSFER your Extension of Stay STAMP from your old passport into your new passport.
