Do I need to cancel my ED visa in Thailand before leaving if it expires after I depart?

My ED visa runs out in late December and I will be leaving Bangkok on December 3. Do I need to go to immigration and officially cancel my ED visa before leaving? Or can I just leave? I plan to come back next year with a DTV visa.

My apologies if this has been asked before, I used the search function and couldn't find a similar question.

TLDR : Answer Summary
If you're on an Education (ED) visa, you typically do not need to visit immigration to cancel it before leaving, as it will expire naturally. However, if you are on an extension of stay, you must formally cancel it. When in doubt, it's advisable to visit immigration in the last week before you leave.

If in doubt just go to the Immigration, in the last week before leaving.

That depends if you're on a VISA or if you're on an EXTENSION.

If you're on a visa, then no you don't have to do anything. If you're on an extension (the stamp in your passport says "extension of stay" then you will be required to cancel that before you leave.
