TLDR : Answer Summary
If you have an ED visa that is still valid, you are generally required to cancel it before applying for a new DTV visa. However, if your ED visa has already expired, there is no need to cancel it as it is no longer valid. There are reports of individuals successfully obtaining a DTV visa while holding an ED visa, but this can carry risks, including complications upon re-entry into Thailand. Always ensure to obtain a re-entry permit if you plan to leave the country while your current visa is still valid.

Multiple people have reported getting a DTV while on an ED and then canceling the ED after returning to Thailand on the DTV. Just make sure you get the re-entry permit before you go in case your DTV app is rejected. Also be prepared for some flak if you have to re-enter with ED.

I called the immigration in Chiang mai and they said if your current visa is still valid. You do need to cancel before applying for new visa. Unless your visa is already expired on Oct 18th? If yes, then you no need to cancel as its already expired anyway.

Same boat, cancelling first. Beware, once cancelled, you've only got 21 days so you should bounce before then.

When you extend your ED visa, you sign a paper that will update immigration about your situation change - that means you should cancel your ED visa. There is a chance that you manage to get and use a new DTV visa without doing it, but I wouldn't personally risk it.

No. A guy posted recently he went to Laos while still on Ed with a re-entry permit. He got the DTV and entered Thailand. He was asked which visa he was entering with. He said DTV. EDIT. Just saw the date of ED Visa. Expired now

That was what the guy posted. I think he also said he would be cancelling the ED Visa as he could not continue the course on the DTV. It does sound crazy. I once went fro Retirement O to B for work and back from B to O again. Each time I had to do a visa run in between. I could not go from one to the other even if the originating visa was cancelled.
