TLDR : Answer Summary
If you don't cancel your Educational (ED) visa before leaving Thailand, it won't directly impact your departure, but it may lead to complications for future visa applications. An ED visa itself cannot be canceled, but if you have an 'Extension of Stay', you need to cancel it at the immigration office before you leave. If you leave without canceling the extension, it might not stop you from applying for a new visa later, but you could face issues when applying for further extensions at the immigration office. It's crucial to understand the difference between a visa and an extension; the visa allows you to stay until the stamped date regardless of changes in your situation, whereas extensions often require cancellation.

One last thing; IN BANGKOK <- the only time you don't have to cancel an ED visa extension IS if you are going from the basic/intermediate thai classes to a new ED visa for the advanced thai classes. The immigration office does not require you cancel your current extension when you leave the country to get a new 90 day ED visa from a thai consulate when you are continuing studying..

Leaving the country without canceling an ED extension of stay does NOT stop you from getting a new visa at a thai consulate in another country BUT it certainly might cause you problems when you go to get a new extension at the immigration office because they will notice you failed to cancel your previous extension correctly.

okay I am going to cover this ONE more time;
There is a HUGE difference between a VISA <- that you get from a thai consulate in another country or from the immigration office inside the country and an "extension of stay" as far as what you do when you want to stop using it.
A VISA cannot be canceled <- meaning IF you are on a valid VISA you can stay the length of time you're stamped in for, no matter if you quit studying, quit working, get divorced, etc.
An extension of stay <-that you get from an immigration office inside the country (especially one based on education or employment) as a rule NEEDS to be canceled BEFORE you leave the country to get another visa or make a new entry to the country.

To cancel an ED visa extension you take paperwork from your school to the immigration office stating you are stopping studying on date xyz. The officer will cancel your current extension and give you a NEW stamp that lets you stay in thailand until that date.

If you still on the Admitted to Stay period you got an entrance in Thailand with the ED Visa you can not cancel this other than just leaving the country. If you applied for an Extension of Stay at your local Immigration Office you NEED to cancel this Extension of Stay before you leave the country at the same Immigration Office.

you'll have 7 days to leave the country

No, there is no change in the last day of admitted to stay date if you stop going to school. You have to leave on the day mentioned in the stamp Admitted until if you arrived on a visa or after cancelling the Extension of Stay on the last day of the permitted until date stamped in your passport.

If you don’t cancel it and in the future will apply for another visa they will tell you to cancel the ED first. Happened to me.
Details don't matter ! The difference between a visa and an extension is huge, and the correct advice depends on which he has. Maybe like you, he is clueless as to what he has, which I personally find shameful for an adult.

cheers guys. I’ll go cancel it any way. Save any problems. Thanks again!

Still more useful info for the guy who is asking if he needs to cancel his visa or not than arguing about details that don’t matter for his case.

I am 100% sure you had an extension of stay. Totally different beast.

I had Non-B until 2016, I left thailand in 2017 without canceling the visa. Came back in 2018 on ED and after 3 months went there to extend it. At CW they said I must cancel my Non-B visa first.

which part of visas are not cancelled do you not grasp ?
Was applying for ED visa extension but in my passport there was another visa (more than one year old) which was not canceled and they refused to extend my current ED visa.
Wrong again, please stop commenting if you do not know the difference between a visa and an extension of stay

I understand what you guys are saying about canceling an extension and cancelling a visa. But something needs to be canceled if you don’t want problems next time.
stop ! You clearly do not know your visas from your extensions

I left Thailand on an ED thinking I would never come back. I came back after the extension expired while I was in my home country. I could not get my new one until the old one was cancelled. I had to get letters from the ministry as well as my college to say that I don’t attend anymore.
You will have a problem if you ever come back and decide to go onto ED again! Trust me, happened to me. You can fix the problem if you decide to come back but it’s a mission.
