Can I exit Thailand on an ED visa and re-enter on a tourist stamp without canceling?

I'm on an ED visa and it expires end of November. If I don't want to extend can I just leave the country and come back on a tourist stamp? Or do I need to formally cancel it?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquired about the process of transitioning from an ED visa to a tourist stamp upon its expiration. The comments provided clarification on whether one must formally cancel their ED visa or if they can simply leave the country and return on a tourist stamp. It is advised to cancel the current visa with documentation from their school and to be aware of the consequences of not formally canceling. If canceled on the last day of the course, immediate departure or an application for a new extension is necessary, typically allowing 7 days to leave if not approved.

If you cancel it on the last day of your course, you have to leave immidiatly or apply for an new Extension of Stay at 1.900 Thb, if not approved you have 7 days to leave the country. Or you ask the school letter in advance as early as 2 to 3 weeks before end of course and you can cancel in advance and make travel plans to leave that day.

The difference of being on a Visa or an Extension of Stay. The Visa bought at a Thai Consulate or Embassy is a SIngle Entry Visa and used when you entered the country. an Extension of Stay is a stamp you got at Immigration Office and let you stay longer to in this case study in Thailand. You signed a form, when you got this Extension of Stay where you agree to report to Immigration if the reason of stay changes. It does not matter the reason change on the last day, the day before or months before you're last day of this Extension of Stay.

You go to the immigration office with paperwork from your school stating you are no longer studying on xxx date. The immigration office will cancel your current extension and give you a new entry stamp that lets you stay until that date. Then you can leave the country and either get a real tourist visa from at thai consulate OR come back in on a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp.

failing to do that can cause you problems down the road as far as extensions etc at the immigration office..

that's NOT how it works in real life. Get the paper from your school, saying you're stopping studying on xxx date, go to the immigration office a week before that date, cancel your extension, get a new admitted until stamp dated the date on the termination of study paperwork and then you can leave the country on or before that date. <- That's how it works.

Even if I just leave a day or 2 before my visa expires? I plan to stick with it until the last day and want to just leave after. I'm not planning on canceling it but also not planning on extending. It'll just be over.
