I have a 1year ED extension of stay that is about to run out.

I have been advised to cancel this extension before leaving.

Can someone confirm that I can cancel this extension at immigration office and get a 7 days extension permit or I have to cancel the day I am flying out? and if so, can I do it at the airport?

Many thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user inquired about cancelling their 1-year educational (ED) visa extension before leaving Thailand, questioning if this could be done at the immigration office or at the airport, and whether they would receive a 7-day extension. A commenter explained that it's advisable to cancel the extension at the office where it was issued before the expiration date to receive a stamp allowing time to leave. Canceling on the last day may result in a 7-day 'application for extension not approved' stamp, but this is not guaranteed. Additionally, cancellations cannot be processed at the airport.

Normally you get a document from the school stating you stop studying on the date your extension expires and you go a week or so BEFORE that date to the office where you got the extension.

Immigrations cancels the extension and gives you a stamp good until the date the paper from the school says you stop studying (the date your current extension expires) <- THEN you have time to plan to leave

IF you wait until the last day and cancel it, most of the time they will sell you a 7 day "application for extension not approved" stamp that gives you a week to get out of thailand BUT they don't have to sell that to you.

Nope you can't cancel an extension at the airport OR at an immigration office that didn't issue the extension you're on now.

!

I got my Ed extension in Chiang Mai but I am based in Bangkok (it's for an online course).

So no chance for me to cancel it at chaeng watthana? I would need to go and cancel it at Chiang Mai immigration office? ๐Ÿฅฒ

, side note. If you are not coming back to Thailand on a long-term basis in the future, you may leave without canceling. Because, as long as you would be staying in Thailand only for short holidays, you would not face much problem. If you think you have even a slight chance to be back in Thailand for any non-immigration visa again, and if it's me, I'd cancel it now and even have to travel inside Thailand to do it. But those are your decision.

yep, that is how it works, there's zero chance of Chaengwatttana canceling it

Hi Tod, if I get out of country without canceling what's the problem with this? Do I get banned or something. For me it would be very costly to return where I got the ED visa and it's extensions issued. Thank you

If you do not cancel it before you leave, then if you ever try to get a long term visa/extension in the future, you will both run into issues for failing to cancel your extension even though you said you would, and you'll be fined 20,000 baht for not doing so.
