TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion revolves around an expat moving from the UK to Pattaya with a need for heart medication. Many commenters suggest that heart medications are readily available in Thailand at reasonable prices, making it potentially unnecessary to import them. Alternatives and local pharmacies, such as Tim's pharmacy, are recommended for acquiring prescriptions and advice. The consensus warns against attempting to mail medications due to strict import regulations and offers insight into how to manage ongoing health needs while living abroad.

Steve Lowe, my UK doctor would only give me 3 months of blood pressure tablets. When I asked for more because I was staying in Thailand longer they refused and told me to buy here 😔

Make sure you have the right travel / health insurance to cover all hospital and repatriation cost.

Make sure your family does not end up with hospital and other bills, that may bring them in debt for a decade.

FANO PHARMACY WILL HAVE EVERYTHING YOU NEED, cheap and has all unusual and regular medicines, prescription and non prescription! Good luck. FANO PHARMACY IN PATTAYA/chonburi! Good luck!
Brett **********
There is a FARANG PHARMACY IN PATTAYA! I found it easier to get diabetes medicine there than some pharmacy’s in the US!
Charlie ********
Probably more important to get health insurance. You can get meds at the chemist
Brook ********
@Charlie *******
it’s very difficult if not impossible to get health insurance with preexisting conditions.

It’s easier for Thai health, insurance companies to deny you rather than write a policy with exclusions
Christopher *******
Ask Doctor in UK, they should give you a good few months to start you off. Then check online, for Thai pharmacies who can source and deliver meds.

Very helpful information

Why not go to Fascino pharmacy and see if they have it there

I am on medication for thrombosis, I buy it without a prescription at a pharmacy near Chula and have it posted to Kanchanaburi. Takes a day to arrive and costs me B600 for a 100 tab boyyle.

So I'd check out the availability of your meds before attempting to import them, Thai customs are real hard nosed sods.

I'm gonna bring 90 days supply and find the alternatives when I arrive 🙏👍😁😁
Nick ************
You are entitled to bring 3 months supply of any drugs you are prescribed from the UK. That should give you plenty of time to find what you need in Thailand either from a hospital or pharmacy. The hospitals are often cheaper.

I was worried too as I need quite an unusual drug. The hospital bent over backwards to order it for me.

cheers apixiban, bisoprolol, ramipril, and dapagliflozin probably different names in Thailand 👍👍
Steve **********
@Steve *****
Pharmasuticles are same name everywhere I think.

If you get them from a pharmacy there, they're not exotic, so can get here.

I take 2. It's about $8 US a month
David ***********
I tried to ship some in. Took days sorting it out with customs and then had to see the police and then pay huge import duty. Everything I need I can get here much cheaper, mostly without a script
Brook ********
You cannot legally import medicine into Thailand via mail or courier.

Ask a doctor or pharmacy here if your medicine or a safe substitute is available within Thailand.

A hospital physician is a good place to start.

Tablets (not prohibited but restricted) are going to be repacked by Steve’s daughter. If it was me, I’d have to find out by sending a small trial amount that I would be prepared to abandon if necessary.

@Christopher **********
Arrested, fined, jailed, banned and deported at your own expense. It doesn’t matter if it’s a pill, injection or suppository. You can’t import prescription medications without approval and a license.

You can hand carry a limited supply of most, but not all prescriptions.

I can explain it, but I can’t understand it for you
Christopher ***********
@Brook *******
Strange. My Mrs recently attempted to send a PROHIBITED item from our local post office. I ‘advised’ her it was listed as such on Thai Post Office website. Unconvinced (she thinks I know nothing) she took it herself to the Post Office. They said they couldn’t accept it. However, no police involvement. A friend has an outstanding UK arrest warrant. I knew that it was safe to fly into UK because Border Force have no access to (and even less interest in) UK Police National Computer. One of the ‘experts’ on here insisted that they have all sorts of apps and check for warrants. My friend has since flown in/out of Manchester Ringway Airport three times since and remains at liberty!

If you're having to pay for the prescription and then postage you'll find there'll be little difference in the costs

What are the implications of obtaining prescriptions when based outside the UK?
Christopher ***********
@Euan *******
No charge for GP consultations or writing out prescriptions in UK. If in England prescription medicines are free from age 60 onwards.
Euan ********
@Christopher **********
"Under current legislation, the NHS's duty of care ends when a person has been absent, or intends to be away from the United Kingdom for a period of more than three months".

I was abroad for six years. My GP’s surgery wrote to my unoccupied UK house with several appointments to attend my NHS hospital during that time plus annual flu, Covid jabs and pneumococcal vaccination invitations. Of course, I was unaware and each appointment was rebooked and wasted multiple times. Eventually, they gave up and threatened to remove me from their panel. I only knew this when I returned. I explained I had been ‘out of the country’ but now returned upon a permanent basis. All was restored and my preventative care brought up-to-date. In my experience my practice doesn’t want to know. They prefer email to personal contact. That was why I suggested Steve tells them he’s ‘abroad until further notice’. Leaves things undated and open-ended pending his return ‘upon a permanent basis’.

I'm on free prescription 👍

@Steve *****
That’s great Steve. I tell my GP’s practice that I’m ‘abroad until further notice’. That ensures they won’t remove me from their panel as it’s my intention to return at some future date. I don’t need regular medication myself. However, I’m sure if you mentioned something similar they would be agreeable to continuing to issue prescriptions ‘pending your return to UK’. As regards postal delivery by Royal Thai Mail in Thailand, it’s the same as UK (door to door). You don’t need to find out when items arrive and collect them in person from the post office as you do in certain other countries.

Include myself. I have CHF and take 4 meds per day. One is Entresto and I did get my healthcare provider to give me a 90 day supply. I split time between California and Bangkok. But stupid me, I accidentally left one 30 day supply at home and brought an empty bottle. My Thai wife went to the pharmacy and they sold her a package of entresto for about
***
rd the cost in the USA. Dang, our healthcare system has too many crooks.

I wish you luck and here’s what I would do. 1. Have a Thai citizen actually obtain your meds in person. There is a Farang price and a Thai price. You won’t need a prescription. 2. Immigration won’t even look at your carry on.
Frank **********
@Robert ****
Immigration won't look at the carry on but customs may.
Robert *****
@Frank *********
It’s possible but most of the time we pick up our large 50 pound bags (4) that my Thai wife packed and we head directly outside to the van we hired. No customs check. I think it’s because they get X-rayed getting on the plane, checked again in Taiwan and simply not important in Thailand. Even going back to LAX thru Tokyo or this last trip Taiwan US customs just asks a couple questions and rarely do they open any bags. Maybe because we’re retired….lol..

Medicare is not normally dual priced item although some shops are cheaper then others. I have been geting all my Meds here for a couple decades as I'm reimbursed.

Heart medication is readily available in Thailand. But you may need a doctor to advise on local alternatives to ones you are using.
