Can I apply for a tourist visa after my ED visa expires and leave for Malaysia?

Good afternoon,

My fiancรฉ and I, have been studying here for the past year (come end of Jan).

As studying requires us to stay in one place to attend the classes, weโ€™ve only had change to see the surrounding area (which is lovely) but would love the opportunity to travel around a little and see the rest of the country.

Would I be correct in thinking when the ED visa expires and the course is finished, we could then leave the country (to a nearby country - ie Malaysia) apply for a 2 month tourist visa and come back as tourists to explore then country?

Just checking what the set up is.

Any info or advice is truly appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is inquiring if they can leave Thailand to apply for a 2-month tourist visa in Malaysia after their ED visa expires upon completing their studies. Comments confirm there should be no issues with this plan, advising to check the requirements for the tourist visa and to cancel the ED visa extension at the immigration office before leaving, to avoid complications with future visa applications.

You should have no issue at all doing that

go to the thai consulate you're thinking of applying at for a tourist visa, READ the requirements, the processing time, etc MEET the requirements and you'll get the visa,

BUT

I would suggest, you get documentation from your school and go to the immigration office where you got your ED visa/extension to cancel that extension before you leave.

NOT doing it won't affect you getting a tourist visa from a thai consulate OR getting a 30 day extension on that at the immigration office

However if you're ever gonna get another Non-Immigrant type visa (ED, B, O etc) the uncancelled ED extension in your passport could cause issues

, A piece of extra info... Also in case you want to leave Thailand to another country through land (or so-called sea) borders some borders wouldn't let you leave the kingdom unless you officially cancel your extension based on studying.

but going by air is ok?

insofar as you'll get out without cancelling your current extension yes, ๐Ÿ™‚

@Ellie ******
well spotted I totally forgot that (y)
@Rick *******
I'd make an effort to get that extension cancelled BEFORE you exit the country :0

thanks for your info ๐Ÿ‘

Can it be cancelled in a different immigration office? Or must it be the same as weโ€™d ideally not go back to the same area where weโ€™ve been studying.

You cancel an extension at the office where you got it issued
@Rick *******
Sadly, that you don't want to go back to the area where you were studying doesn't factor into it ๐Ÿ™

if the extension is cancelled before I leave, wouldnโ€™t that make me an overstayer? Or they give a few days?

@Rick *******
you get a letter from your school saying you stop studying on xx date (usually the day your extension expires). You go to the immigration office about a week before that date with the letter and cancel the extension. The immigration office will cancel the extension and stamp you in until the termination date on the letter from the school THEN you leave on or by that date

now the thing is, IF you're not gonna ever get a Non-imm visa to thailand of any type, AND if you're exiting by air, to just buy a tourist visa in another country and come back after you have that (by land is fine), use the time on the tourist visa and go back to where you come from in all reality you don't have to cancel the extension ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ˜ฎ

it won't stop you from comin' in on a free 30 day entry stamp, it wont stop you from getting a tourist visa, it won't stop you from comin' into the country on a tourist visa or getting a 30 day extension on a free entry stamp or a tourist visa entry.

It's just you didn't officially cancel your extension and that WILL cause you grief if you ever try to get a new Non-Imm visa

one more thing also, I can still extend a 2 month tourist visa from a consulate at immigration office by an additional 30 days, right?

you must cancel your extension at the same immigration that issued it.
