Do I need to cancel my education visa in Thailand before leaving, and will I have issues obtaining a tourist visa after an extended stay?

I’ve been in Thailand since late December studying Thai on an Education visa. For family reasons, I need to return to the US earlier than planned at the end of May. Two questions:

1. Do I need to formally “cancel” my visa or is it automatically canceled when I depart Thailand?

2. I would like to return to Thailand in June (yes, I know I have to go through what’s fine again). Will I have a problem obtaining a 60 day tourist visa, considering I’ve already been in Thailand for almost 6 months this year?

Thank you for your help

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquiring about their education visa in Thailand has two main questions. First, they want to know if they need to formally cancel their visa before leaving Thailand, especially considering the potential requirement to inform immigration due to their study status. Several comments suggest obtaining a letter from their school and visiting the immigration office to cancel their extension of stay rather than relying on an automatic cancellation upon departure. The second question pertains to returning to Thailand on a 60-day tourist visa after an extended stay, which respondents indicate should not pose a problem.

Why not apply for re-entry so you can keep the visa ?

Because the OP wants to return on a tourist visa and not continue the studies

Cancel the extension of stay you have now by taking a letter from your school saying you will stop studying on xxx date to your immigration office

Have them say the last day you study is the date you will leave the country and go a week before that date to the immigration office to cancel the current extnesion. They will give you a stamp good until the date you fly out. Then you're good to leave

Look in your passport. I'm almost certain you have a stamp that says "extension of stay based on studying". If you do, you'll have to cancel the extension of stay before leaving.

Go to the school and get a document saying you're no longer studying on a certain date. GO to the immigration office with that document and cancel your extension of stay. If you cancel it before May 29, you can apply for a 60 day extension of stay based on unable to travel due to COVID-19.

>I would like to return to Thailand in June

You should have no problems entering on a 60 day tourist visa.
