Can I apply for a 60-day tourist visa online while in Thailand with a HK passport and visa waiver?

Dear all, if I am currently in Thailand with HK passport (arriving at visa waiver for 30 days), can I apply the Tourist Visa (60days) online when I am in Thailand? and use this upon the last day of the visa waiver? How do I use it ? Do I use it by leaving Thailand by land at the Laos border and enter Thailand showing them the e-visa? Thanks all!

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user inquires about applying for a 60-day tourist visa while in Thailand with a Hong Kong passport, currently on a 30-day visa waiver. The community clarified that it's not possible to apply for a tourist visa from within Thailand and that the visa application needs to be done through a consulate if outside of Thailand. Discussions centered around the differences between visa waivers and exemptions, emphasizing that those with a Hong Kong passport cannot extend their visa waiver stay. The conversation highlighted the importance of the immigration stamp received upon entry, as it determines the type of visa status.

Thank you all! very useful information!

Please be aware the with a Hong Kong passport you would get a visa waiver (as you correctly stated). This is a completely different entry scheme to a visa exempt entry and you cannot get an extension from it.

Hong Kong does use the evisa system for tourist visas so you could apply if you were there. You can’t if you’re not.

, interesting about visa waivers. Do you have a link to somewhere can read about the differences from visa exemptions as HK is listed as a country entitled to visa exemption even the list is also talking about bilateral agreement:

The single “ผ” a Thai “P” or “Paw” on the stamp “ผ.30” is a visa exempt entry. A visa waiver stamp would be “ผผ.30”.

Not sure if this is the latest version but in this image the bilateral agreement countries can enter with no visa for the number of days shown. This entry cannot be extended.

, the list is dated April 2023, so it should be pretty much up to date. Ok, so countries on a bilateral agreement are using a different system. As you will notice, some countries incl. HK is listed in both lists 🙁 Anyway, those countries get a waiver instead of an entry stamp or both? And cannot extend their stay on the usual 30 days tourist extension? Is this correctly understood?

@Henrik ***
Yes that’s correct

, it is actually stated on the document, that "Passport holders of Vietnam and Hong Kong are entitled for tourist visa exemption scheme". It seems a little strange. I know you are correct, but a bit strange that I cannot find any information on this new category of "visa on arrival" (VOA is the name of the document)...

Thanks for sharing the list, so it looks like HK is both “visa exempt” and “visa waiver”… then I am puzzled now whether Hk passport can apply extension or not.

it all depends on the stamp in your passport. That will show if you are on visa exempt or visa waiver.

so is it all depends on what the officer stamp me when I am at the counter?

thanks, let me check what stamp he gave me last time.

@Quizas ***************
this is what a visa exempt stamp looks like. Although it just says 30 now.

This is the stamp I got last month when I entered Chiang Mai with HK passport, looks like the same ?

@Quizas ***************
pretty sure that's visa exempt then.
@Stuart ********
can you confirm?

@Quizas ***************
, as I understand it you are getting a special entry stamp on a visa waiver, so you will probably need to get this changed for getting an extension...

You can't apply for a tourist visa from inside Thailand. You would have to go to an embassy in a nearby country to obtain one

nearby country such as Laos? but seems Laos does not use online application , so do I go into Laos, do to the Thai embassy there and apply? do you know how many days does it take to apply?
Brandon ************
@Quizas ***************
1 business day. As John said drop off in the morning and pickup the next business afternoon (so beware of weekends and holidays).

Vientiane requires an appointment but Savannakhet does not.

@Quizas ***************
none of the nearby countries use the e-visa system you have to physically go to an embassy. I think it takes 2 days in Laos, hand in one morning get back next afternoon but check the website for the embassy you plan to use
Wayne *********
Your on visa exempt so why not go to immigration office and extend it for 30 more days

@Wayne ********
I learnt from some other post that, HK passport is visa waiver, and cannot get 30 day extension

@Quizas ***************
oh really that's a bugger
John **********
@Wayne ********
visa waiver is not the same as visa exempt

@John *********
Cheers John for the correct.

You cannot get a tourist visa from Thailand.

Evisa does not change any rules about how visas work. It's only a different method of applying for the visa. So you still need to apply through the Thai consulate of the country you are physically in. If you are not in Hong Kong you cannot apply for a tourist visa from the consulate in Hong Kong.

Part of the application is to send them the pages in your passport with stamps in them, and they will see that you are in Thailand. Also they will require you to show a plane ticket from Hong Kong to Thailand as part of the application.

so for the tourist visa application, I have to apply it in Hong Kong, and I also need to fly from Hong Kong to Thailand directly? What about a situation that when I am in HK, apply the tourist visa online, then I go to other country for a week or two for short trip, then upon the evisa approval, can I flight from that country to Thailand ?

have to take that up with the embassy.
