Is there a limit to visa extensions for UK passport holders visiting Thailand?

Is there a maximum amount of times you can extend in a 6 month period or a year period? I came in on a UK passport in January and then extended for 30 days and left in March. I will be again coming to Thailand for around 70 days and just wondering the best way of doing this? At the moment I’m thinking staying roughly 25 days then fly to somewhere else (possibly Hanoi) and then come back with a 30 day visa exemption and extend it? I won’t be able to do a visa before I arrive but is it possible to do it whilst I’m there and avoid the need to travel outside the country?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The maximum number of extensions for a visa exemption or tourist visa in Thailand is one extension per entry, valid for an additional 30 days. If you're coming from the UK and plan to stay for about 70 days, it's advisable to apply for a 60-day tourist visa before arriving. While you cannot obtain a tourist visa within Thailand, you can obtain it from a nearby Thai embassy if needed. Additionally, when re-entering Thailand, ensure you have necessary proofs such as accommodation, onward travel, and proof of funds.

Remember the 3 proofs when re-entering :

The three Immigration tourism proofs are:

- proof of accommodation (e.g. hotel bookings for at least a few days)

- proof of onward travel (an international travel ticket leaving Thailand within your permitted-to-stay period, i.e. 30 days for visa exempt or 60 days for a Tourist Visa and

- proof of funds (20,000B or equivalent in any major currency in CASH per individual, or 40,000B for a family)

Every visa exempt or tourist visa entry can be extended one time by 30 days then you have to leave. You can't get a tourist visa inside Thailand but you could visit a nearby thai embassy to get one

Just. So you are aware if you have a passport from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Iran, Nepal, Togo, Nigeria or Uganda you cannot get an extension from a tourist visa.

When going to Thailand for 31 - 60 ( 90 )days, the 60 days touristvisa is the best option, and it is possibel to get it in a few days through the

website.

In stead of considering what to do, just apply instead of wasting time on making intricate plans.

It is cheaper than visa excempt + 30 days extension.

No need of a onward ticket ( 90 days 1 onward ), if returnticket within 60 days.

It is easier to apply from the comfort of your home.

Not wasting holiday time to find, go to and waiting at a immigration office ( 90 you would need that ).

Then no need to leave Thailand in up to 90 days.

depends also of your previous history. If you were in thailand for a long while last year, then you might get some issues

generally, if you got the exemption stamp you will get the extension (unless you're from a country that cannot get the extension like Sri Lanka).
@Stu***
might know differently though as he volunteers at an immigration office in Phuket I believe.

if you haven't abused the system ;)

@Michael *********
, if you're seen to have or suspected of abusing the system, you aren't going to get the initial visa exemption stamp to begin with...

@Declan *********
Anyone with an exemption stamp can get an extension. For most countries if you have a tourist visa you can get an extension, except Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Iran, Nepal, Togo, Nigeria or Uganda.

last year was 0 days. This year will be around 170 days split between 3 trips.

You might get some questions when you get back the last time but I guess you won't have any serious troubles besides that

your plan is good.
Stuart *********
There isn’t a maximum number of extensions you can get. If you can get in visa exempt you can get an extension.

[Edit: One extension only per entry]

Thanks
@Kool ******
for pointing out that could have been interpreted wrong.

so there isn't any confusion you can only get one extension each time you enter as a tourist. To get another one you must leave Thailand and return as a new tourist visa exempt, or with a tourist visa. Then you can get another extension, but only one.
