Also now the in look for younger people is kpop based. They have the same thing (lighten their skin) plus lighter skin in general to start so even more influence.
As some others have mentioned this isn't just Thailand. In the west in the past it was seen as good to have pale skin as it meant you weren't working outdoors. Then when you could go abroad it was fashionable to have a tan to show you could afford that. Then with low cost air travel a tan then became a "lower class" thing again. It's just people peopling, though I wish it wasn't.
