TLDR : Answer Summary
The community discussion revolves around finding alternative locations for converting to a student visa in Thailand, especially since the original poster's tourist visa is nearing expiration while waiting for their student visa paperwork. Suggestions included various countries such as Vietnam, Malaysia, Bali, Philippines, and Hong Kong, with specific experiences shared about processing visas in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), where it can be done quickly within two days at the consulate.

I went to Saigon (HCMC).and done, as is the usual case, in 2 days. Just be sure to have crisp, new, not creased or uncut (no cuts at the top/bottom/sides) US dollars both for the Thai Consulate. They will not budge on this issue (my experience).

No need to book an appointment in advance for Saigon (unlike Vientiane now).
