Questions about last phase of life issues for expats in Thailand.
Assuming I come to Thailand on an LTR retirement visa from the US and don't plan to ever return.
I've looked into assisted living centers in Thailand and when that time comes it looks like where I'd want to spend my last time.
Question is will I be able to stay in Thailand when I'm at the point of needing care, or even unable to take care of myself anymore? Would I be able to get visa extensions while in that condition and poor health?
I would have funds to take care of my health issues
Update:
For my situation I would most likely be on a Wealthy Pensioner Visa and have a Thai lawyer in the loop for estate planning. Currently don't have a Thai lawyer as I haven't made the move yet.
What has motivated my thoughts is a friend has just found to be incompetent and placed in assisted facility and a parent is looking at having to go from in home care to a facility.
The question I'm attempting to resolve is will Thailand continue to allow expats to live there if things like Alzheimer, dementia, or being bedridden occur requiring fulltime care
I started the process of reaching out to attorneys to obtain the wealthy pensioner LTR Visa, in terms of getting rates and doing my due diligence. The going rate seems to be Pretty expensive, $1,500 for primary and $750 per dependent.
I was in discussion with this one attorney who I believed was a good fit. However, I am bit of an anxious person, upon reaching out he would either ask for a clearer copy of my passport, additional income or request a few more days to respond. As such, I decided to complete the application myself. I have to say it was much easier than I thought. Fingers crossed. Hoping to move on to the next stage.
Hello, I’m relocating to Thailand in September. How far in advance do I need to apply for my visa? Have proof of funds or deposited funds, etc? Looking at either non O retirement or Wealthy Penshioner. Thanks for any advice.
The BOI has asked further documents from me after I provided the normal required information for wealthy pensioneer (80k passive income, health insurance, etc).
Either a health insurance covering at least 50k USD and running 10 months more
Or
Proof that I had 100k USD in my bank for the last 12 months.
Now I don’t know anyone having 100k in the bank for a year. People having that amount have it in assets - like I have my savings in stocks.
And insurance? Mine covers up to 1 million (a big heart surgery) and runs 12 months before being renewed. But it will be renewed next January, so it’s not covering 10 months from now. I had to get another (lots cheaper) one just for that.
I have a LTR visa (wealthy pensioner) I'm on holiday in the u.s when I fly back and fill out the entry form do I have to show a departure ticket. Im not leaving again till next June. Thanks
Having received my approval for the Thailand LTR Visa issuance for Wealthy Pensioner, I'd like to give some information I have learned from the process. I started the process mid-March 2025 and had to provide updates upon two requests from the Thai BOI.
Here are my thoughts on submissions:
1. Medical(Tricare): I am retired US Navy. I received a letter from the US Defense Health Agency outlining that I have Tricare Overseas that met and exceeded the $100,000 minimum coverage. Additionally, I clipped pages from the Tricare Overseas Program (TOP) Provider Manual which broke down the Inpatient, Outpatient, and Emergency Coverage Limits.
2. Medical(Civilian): I would advise providing a policy statement and the respective coverage limits.
3. Income Verification(Annuities): Obtain annuity confirmation letters outlining annual or monthly income from wherever you obtain your income. I obtained letters from the DFAS website(Navy), OPM(Government), and from Social Security. I did not include my investment dividends for my submission.
4. Bank Statements: I only provided one year's worth of monthly statements.
5. With the initial submission and with the followup requests for additional information, you have to merge all documents into one PDF relative to the respective data for that field(ie medical, income, ...). I added a business cover letter to each of these outlining them as attachments and a definition of each. I believe the initial evaluators of your data, although english speakers, may not have the comprehensive knowledge of your specific data, so it's best to succinctly clarify them in your letter.
I believe the follow on requests for data regarding my application was definitely my own doing and circumstance. If anyone submitting has a question, please do not hesitate to ask me. My response to you will only be based on my own experience and may exceed the requirements for your specific submission of data.
I wish you good fortune in your submission for the LTR Visa!
