What options do expats in Thailand have regarding visa extensions during the pandemic?

OK, looks like making boarder runs is not gonna happen any more for the time being.

MANY folks are now stuck with visas that will soon be expiring and no way to renew.

If anyone hears any REAL news about the possibility of some virus related exceptions that Thai immigration may offer (extending visas more times than normal), ...

Thanks if advance for keeping us posted.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting border closures, many expats in Thailand are facing challenges with expiring visas and limited options for renewal. There is hope for possible exceptions or extensions from Thai immigration. Discussions in the community highlight concerns about overstaying visas, the unavailability of border runs, and the need for updates from embassies regarding assistance for those unable to leave the country. Some expats are considering contacting their embassies for guidance or exploring temporary stay options, as local immigration offices may be providing extensions under certain conditions.

Your Embassy will only grant you a letter to stay in Thailand if you have proof of a cancelled and re-scheduled flight that shows you made an attempt to return back to your country. You won’t be able to just live in Thailand on an expired Tourist visa and use the excuse that you didn’t want to go back.

each embassy has their own policy. Many countries ARE issuing these letters and do not need proof of anything.

You don't know what each embassy will or won't do.

Bali is giving overstayers an emergency visa extension. Hopefully, this will catch on and other ASEAN countries will do the same.

Thailand has too.

The U.S. Embassy Bkk issued a long Health Advisory on March 20. In that advisory it says... "U.S. citizens normally resident overseas should avoid international travel."

Monday, I am going to send an email letter to the U.S. Embassy Bkk asking that this phrase be used in a letter on Embassy Letterhead sent to me as a PDF attachment in reply. Or to please use a stronger more definitive statement.

I will explain that I am a resident here in Thailand. Furthermore, that leaving causes a great deal of problems for me as I have serious responsibilities here.

I will also point out that I remain a citizen of the United States. Plus attach a copy of the main page of my passport. I don't want them to overlook that fact. 😉

Please come back an update after doing this on Monday. My 30 day extension expires on Thursday and I am praying Thailand goes on lockdown before then so it is impossible to leave and we have no choice but to stay. Bali is giving overstayers an emergency visa extension. Hopefully, this will catch on and other ASEAN countries will do the same.

Probably within a couple of days most airlines will cancel flights for the foreseable future and more embassies will start providing their citizens with the letter to prove you can't leave to get an extension.

- I think you are correct. But the uncertainty is a real big pain in the butt.

Yeah If all the flights are cancelled from tonight.. it’s either leave the country and try and get back in, or stay here with my girlfriend and see what happens. Given that there’s what? A couple hundred people at CW every day there’s gonna be a lot of people in the same boat, so it’s not like we overstay on purpose etc. Doing our best to figure out a plan.

British embassy closed until Monday, tried calling that’ll never work so Monday I’ll head down there and see what’s what 🙂

Thai Lion and AirAsia has stopped all international flights but Thai Airways and other airlines are still operating. It is easy to leave but will be impossible to come back not until this pandemic has settled. It’s a very tough decision. I do not want to overstay my Visa. I’m already on a 30 day extension from CW Immigration and planned to do a Visa run to Laos (now, Borders are closed indefinitely) and I have all my things here and I’d be paying for rent for my lease until who knows when I would be able to return.

Not going back to your home country is a deliberate overstay.😉 I doubt they will accept it as an excuse.

Going out of the country and trying to get back in will proof very difficult now. Get health insurance for USD 100,000 and medical certificate. Seems expensive and difficult to figure out where to get it.

My daughter is here in Nonthaburi on a tourist visa.

I wonder if she could make a trip to Phuket, check into a hotel there for a day and then go get her visa extended there?

Maybe?

Canada won’t issue such letters and it is subject to immigration discretion. I think very soon every one be granted overstay without consequence.

This if of course just speculation.

Hoping for the best for everyone.

How long have you already been here on a Tourist Visa? 🤣

Would like to know what happens when someone extends their visa for 30 days and that 30 days is running out and you can’t travel to Laos/Myanmar/Cambodia to a Thai Embassy and apply for a new Visa. Seems like you either have to overstay your visa in Thailand for who knows how long or fly back to your home country until this pandemic is over. What are the other options?

Things are getting hard. Many border is close and nit abke to get renew due to cov-19 there will be a lot of over stay happening as we speak... Hope things csn get better soon. A trip back hone is going to get very expensive and is a one way ticket as no visa is going to be issued fir the time being.... 😱😭 Any update guys.

malaysai may extend the closing of border date
