If i buy a return flight for a 60 day visit and they change the 60 day visit policy whilst im there , would they honour ?it or would I have to change my return flight to a sooner departure?
Answer summary
The general consensus is that if you enter Thailand before the new visa policy takes effect, your entry stamp will be honored, allowing you to stay for the duration specified on your stamp (up to 60 days). Changes to visa rules do not affect those who have already entered the country. The new regulations, expected to reduce the visa-free period from 60 to 30 days, will be valid only after it is officially published in the Royal Gazette, and any arrivals prior to this publication will retain their original entry terms.

What "tourist" stays for 60 days?

If you get there before it changes then you will get a stamp for 60 days. Otherwise it will only be 30 and you will have to apply for a 30 day extension at an immigration office.

the current 60 day visa free period for Australians plus plus entering Thailand was, yesterday, approved to be reduced to 30 days with, still as current, an extension option of 30 days.

It won't come into effect until 15 days after it is declared and published in the Thai Royal Gazette - the date of this declaration could be a couple of weeks off.

Any entries prior to that declaration will still be entitled to that (current) 60 days visa free entry.

The new regulations will be valid after 1st June.If you enter Thailand before 1st June ,you can get 60 days tourist visa ,after 1st June you can get 30 days tourist visa.I recommend you to wait a couple of days until the new law is published in the Official Gazette to understand full details.

The stamp on your passport will have the date on (or before) which you must leave the country.

Even the stamp given when I arrived on my Non-O visa with re-entry is until the end validity date of my re-entry permit and visa.

Yes, once the entry stamp is in your passport that's it
