Normally visit for 4/5 months and get a 6 month multi entry visa. As I look after my mother now, I am only visiting for 6 weeks, 42 days, do I need a visa still and if so what one please?

TLDR : Answer Summary
For a 6-week visit to Thailand, you have a couple of options regarding your visa. You can either apply for a single entry tourist visa at the Thai consulate in your country, which would give you 60 days upon entry, or you can enter Thailand under the visa-exempt entry that allows for 30 days. If you choose the second option, you can extend your stay by 30 days for a fee of 1900 baht at the immigration office. It may be worth considering which option best suits your travel plans.
A single entry tourist visa from the thai consulate in your country before you come here would do the trick and give you 60 days when you stamp in. .
OR
you can show up here on a free 30 day visa exempt entry and go to the immmigration office where you stay to get a 30 day extension for 1900baht <-(which is more than a single entry 60 day tourist visa costs in your country ๐ )
