Hello, everyone!

Is it true that I can get a visa extension after the first 30 days in Thailand from a LOCAL IMMIGRATION OFFICE for an additional 60 days, and I don't have to leave Thailand to get it from another country? If so, why is it that we are required to have a confirmed/bought onward tickets leaving Thailand on or before the 30 day limit when we get to immigration at the airport?

If this is the case, what's the stipulation or requirements in order to do it at the Bangkok Thai Embassy? Thank you in advance for you help.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, you can extend your 30-day visa exemption for an additional 30 days at a local immigration office in Thailand for 1,900 THB, and no proof of onward travel is required for this extension. However, there is no Thai embassy located in Thailand; for a 60-day single-entry tourist visa, you would need to visit a Thai consulate in a neighboring country.

No matter what you did or didn't do last year.

This year if you entered on a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp you can extend it for 30 days ONCE for 1900baht.

After that you have two choices

do a "border-bounce" <- stamp out of thailand, stamp in&out of another country and stamp back into thailand to get another 30 day visa exempt entry stamp

OR

go to a thai consulate and buy a tourist visa which will get you stamped in for 60 days when you re-enter thailand.

the ones I'm interested in only rents for a minimum of 1 month. That's okay, I'll wait until I get to Hua Hin to see the place in person, then, I will be able to ask all the questions I need answered before I commit to any rental agreement.

Sara, if you are concerned about the integrity of the Villas, can you reserve for a short-time stay and then extend once you arrive? They are probably not busy this time of the year so extending your stay is likely to be easier.

And speaking of villa rental, I wanted to book a villa in Hua Hin that I found a few that I like at Room By Room website, but, communications had been an issue and I can't find the fine prints when it comes to rental agreements, policies, stipulations, deposit rules, etc. anywhere in their website. Additionally, once you've booked with them the deposit of 50% of the entire booking is none refundable if you want to cancel. Also, it's kind of hard to book something for 89 days and pay that deposit without seeing the place in person. I also can't find it anywhere in their website the policies and stipulations for paying utilities. Any input on this?

I already have the proof of onward travel leaving Thailand and I would most likely have the proof of hotel booking in Hua Hin, as well. I'll have to weigh my options now and decide which is a better option for me.

Speaking of proof of hotel, will a rental agreement of a villa be acceptable?

There're thai consulates in both Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, but to sell you a tourist visa they're gonna require proof of a hotel booking and proof of onward travel in 60 days time (at this time they are not asking for proof of 20K baht).

The easiest consulate down where you are would be the thai consulate in Penang Malaysia. I say that because while the thai consulate in Vientiane Lao is easy to get a tourist visa from it's a slog from Hua Hin..

OR, end up doing exactly what I did last year --- 30 days visa exempt entry stamp, then leave to go get 60 days visa elsewhere. To go to L.A. for the 60 days, would mean getting a hotel for at least 2 days because of the drive (I'm in Glendale, AZ) plus gas, etc.

On the other hand, I've been really wanting to see Vietnam. Is that a good idea? Is there a Thai Embassy there? I am not going back to KL if I can help it.

@Sa**
, Right (y)

If you get a single entry tourist visa you will be stamped in for 60 days when you arrive (actually 59 because they count the day you arrive as day ONE), and you can apply for a 30 day extension at the immigration office for 1900baht

Now, I really need to stay for exactly 89 days and preferably without existing Thailand to get a visa elsewhere, so I am planning on going to L.A. Thai Embassy to get it. I am not sure how long will they give me because their website is a nightmare to maneuver! And, they don't answer my emails or phone calls. Sigh!

So, IF they only give me 60 days (I hope, or do you know how long?), then, I can get another 30 days extension at a local immigration office for 1900baht?

Tod, I just checked my passport and the entry stamp from KL and, you're right! I counted the days and it is only good for another 60 days. I didn't notice that before since I didn't need to stay that much longer.

@M*
, There are problems with some of the southern land border crossings

BUT

like
@Ja***
, said there are no more 15 day visa exempt entry stamps.

Entering the country on a 30 visa exempt entry stamp you can ALWAYS be asked to meet the 3-proof-ofz..

proof of onward travel in 30 days

proof of a hotel booking

proof of 10K baht

I dont know how they apply the law, but i am sure that if you come back from malaysia by land, they dont let you come back in without visa. Even when you have visa, they sometimes ask you to show
*****
b to come in..i went there 2 months ago and i bet my head that around Sadao, Satun, you're not allowed in thailand without visa..

@Mu *****
no, that rule has changed since 1-1-2017. You will now once again get 30 days at landborders, yet you are limited to two overland entries in a calendar year.
Steve *******
Extention of stay for 30 days or 60 if you have dependents here, from an immigration office, cost 1900bt. No proof of onward travel needed.
Mu ****
If you have a 2 months tourist visa, only 30 days extensions are available.
Sara **********

No, I don't have dependents there.

I will be staying majority of the time in Hua Hin to finish another third of my dental work --- I started my dental work last year and spent almost a month there just for dental. I would like to finish as much as possible if not all of my dental work this time, that's why I have planned to stay for 90 days.
Lance *******
Maybe confusing the stamp you got when you entered KL. That's 90 days
Tod *********
@Sa**
, IF you got a Tourist Visa in KL, you were given a visa that was good for 90 days (the enter before date) but when you entered thailand you were stamped for 60 days,

That's how tourist visas work. OR did you have some other type of visa? Look in your passport at the visa itself AND at the entry stamp you got when you came back from KL.

@Tod ********
No, I arrived Bangkok on a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp, stayed for 28 days, left for KL to get a visa for just 60 days more, but was given one for 90 days.
Tod *********
@Sara *********
, you were given a single entry tourist visa which was VALID to enter thailand for 90 days from the date it was issued, BUT that visa ONLY stamps you in for 60 days when you arrive
Mu ****
Tod Daniels, yes sorry about my mistake, that's why i deleted my comment😉

@Tod ********
yes, that's exactly what I did and yet, I was given a visa good for another 90 days in Kuala Lumpur, though I didn't need it for 90 days.
Tod *********
@M*
, you can also get a 30 day extension on a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp too. It's been that way since August 29th 2014
Tod *********
Is that what you did?
Tod *********
@Sara *********
Last year you came in on a visa exempt entry stamp that's good for 30 days, then you most likely went to Kuala Lumpur and BOUGHT a 60 day tourist visa.

@Tod ********
only for another 30 days and not 60? Last year, I left before the first 30 days and went to Kuala Lumpur to get an additional 44 days visa and they gave me one good for another 90 days.
Tod *********
Then you can get your 30 day extension at the Hua Hin Immigration office.
Tod *********
How about telling us where you are in thailand so we can tell you what immigration office to go to so you can get the 30 day extension?
Jan **********
extension costs 1900 thb
Robert *******
You can apply for a 30 day Extension of Stay at a local Immigration Office. There is not such thing as a Bangkok Thai Embassy.
Stéfan ********
There's no Thai embassy in Thailand as this is (already) Thailand, just like there's no embassy of France in France. Embassies exist only in foreign countries. You can get a 30 day extension at immigration offices in bangkok or a 60 day single entry tourist visa at a Thai consulate in a neighboring country such as Laos.
