Will Covid extensions for visas in Thailand be indefinite or is there a timeline for their end?

this last year and a half has been a godsend to those folks who would normally have an issue getting a visa. Out of curiosity, does anyone think that these covid extensions are now going to be indefinite, or is there some timeline as to when this privilege will cease to exist?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion centers around the future of Covid-related visa extensions in Thailand, with various opinions on whether they will be indefinite or end when travel restrictions ease. Many commenters speculate that extensions will cease once borders reopen, particularly when tourist traffic increases again. Current sentiment leans towards a timeline for the end of extensions, but the exact date remains uncertain, with officials exercising caution in granting further extensions.

when they open the borders.

They're going to have a chat about the emergency decree on the 10th September. May or May not affect the covid extension,

Most of the people on Covid extensions these days are not tourists. Most have lived here for ages and got caught out with the borders closing. Many don’t have “homes” to go back to as their home is here. Why weren’t they on a correct visa that allows them to live here? They were. Many were on year long “marriage” visas that required a border bounce every 90 days. Some were on business visas with the same requirement. I don’t see those on that extension as “milking” the system. They were using the system as intended but Covid caught them out. My personal opinion is that they will keep the extensions going until borders are open again and those that “need” to do border bounces can do so once again. But that’s just my opinion. We’ll just have to wait and see what they actually do.

Sorry about that
@Stuart ********
, I deleted my personal opinion comment. It does nothing to drive the thread forward AND I will remove my derogatory term I used towards people on covid extensions as well.

There is no place for that in a visa advice group.

damn. I’d just finished typing a reply to you. No worries. We can have differing opinions. 😀 (edit to add smiley which I had meant to originally)

Yeah bring back visa runs! They were fun and I'm not being sarcastic either 😅

When Borders open up Covid extensions will end.

Enjoy while you can 🙏

Immigration officials the country over are already looking at people who have been here since before the lock down, first on the amnesty, then the embassy letter extension and now the covid extensions with a critical eye

AND

more than a few offices are telling people, this is is, you're done after this extension <- meaning it's time to find a visa OR go back to where you came from.

Then there are are offices that are really giving people a lot of hoops to jump thru to get another covid extension.

The current program is set to run out on Sept 27th. They normally announce that the program is continued a few days before (although last time they announced it 2 weeks ahead of it running out)

All you can do is watch the news like everyone else. It'll be on every thai related group and forum if/when they announce it's continued after the 27th. 😛

hey. Tod you seem to know a lot about Visa and things like that. I have a quick question for you. I'm thinking about doing the Phuket sandbox in December. After my 2 weeks in Phuket would I be able to fly to Bangkok. Yes I am fully vaccinated
Tod *********
Sorry
@Tom *********
you got me confused with someone who can see the future

How would I or anyone know what the domestic flight requirements be in DECEMBER?

Want me to consult my crystal balls or what? 🙂

All I can say is watch the news, see what's what when you get here.
Otto *********
You'ra all wrong. They will stop the extensions, when it is possible again to leave and return from/to Thailand again. That includes somewhat regular air traffic schedules and a border opening for most neighbouring states.
Otto *********
A) my balls are not made of crystal. And

B) sheer logic.

@Otto ********
thailand has no such thing called logic.

@Ryan ****
It has. But it might be well hidden...

@Ot**
You've been able to leave Thailand for years. I think Australia is the only country people are having issues getting back to.
Tod *********
@Otto ********
and you know this how? Checked your crystals balls? 😛
Bim *******
Indefinite I doubt it but hope they at least keep them going for sometime until borders fully open without restrictions.
Michael ********
All answers are speculation, guessing they will end when tourist numbers start going up again
Darren *******
I wouldn't be surprised if they're gone by the end of the year on the basis they're talking about opening up more and more over the next month or so.

Either way, they're not going to be indefinite.
Bim *******
@Darren ******
opening up doesn't mean other countries open up. Many are waiting on bordering countries to open.
Darren *******
@Bim ******
not everyone is a national of those bordering countries so as far as the Thai govt would be concerned you can fly to the country of your passport. There have been reports of some immigration offices asking for proof you can't go back home in order to provide the unable to travel due to covid extensions.
Bim *******
@Darren ******
well I have lived here 8 years and going back to me home country isn't an option. I don't have a home there. It's not as black and white for some.
Darren *******
@Bim ******
if you live here then why are you on an unable to travel due to covid visa?
Bim *******
@Darren ******
some visas are not transferred inside the country you need to do a border run. My first. Just stupid rules
James ********
@Darren ******
that is true.

Covid extensions will stop when covid stops restricting travel.
