I got married to a Thai in 2007 in South Africa at Home affairs.

On the marriage certifica there is NO ID or passport number for my wife. I see this also on some of my friends marriage certificated.

My concern is.....if I apply for extension of stay based on marriage, will the certificate be accepted?

And when you renew your marriage EOS on year 2, must bove you and your wife be present at immigration?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A marriage certificate without an ID or passport number for the Thai spouse may be problematic when applying for a visa extension based on marriage in Thailand. It's advised to have the marriage registered with the Thai embassy and obtain a certified marriage certificate. For the extension process, both spouses need to be present during the renewal application at immigration, and additional documentation may be required by Thai immigration.

My wife and I were married in the US nearly 25 years ago but never registered it in Thailand. We're now going through that process as we're preparing to move (retire) to Thailand. We had to get our US marriage document certified by the US State Department for international use then send it to the Thai Consulate in Los Angeles to certify it for use in Thailand. The document can then be registered in Thailand. The process may be similar for you in Australia.

Its a little easier for US citizens to get their marriage certificate certified here in thailand because you can fill out a blank affidavit stating certificate xxx dated yyy between person 111 and person 222 is a real and accurate certificate and the US embassy here will notarize it.

BUT your advice is sound for doing it in your country before you come here.

, hi from a fellow South African.

1. Phone the Thai embassy in Pretoria, I found them very, very helpful. I am sure they can assist you with advice as to how to get the marriage certificate re-issued with the Thai ID number. And I would absolutely recommend you get this done while in SA.

2. On the Thai side, things are getting very strict. Thai immigration is asking for more documents than they ever have (eg. I had to provide my matric certificate from 35 years ago, even though I've lived in Thailand for 20 plus years). I would say this is especially so for those of us from Africa. I have had to provide many more documents than I ever had to before.

3. It took 3 months for me to get the required certificate in point 2 from SA. And the Thai immigration officers had zero empathy for delays due to Covid...

4. I strongly suggest you get every single document that may possibly be needed certified while you are still in South Africa. DO NOT come to Thailand on a Tourist visa and hope a transition will be easy. It has never been easy for those of us from Africa, and its much harder now than it was before. (I know getting things sorted out seems like a big hassle in South Africa, but trust me, its MUCH more of a hassle trying to get things done when you are in Thailand). Sort out everything in South Africa before you come here.

5. I understand that other posters are trying to help, but there is a huge difference between being from "Africa" and being from the USA when it comes to Thai immigration.

* I'm going to mention again, the staff at the Thai embassy in Pretoria are fantastic humans. Contact them, and follow what they say. All the best

thanks...I am on pension. Will they ask me for matric certificate?

What other documents must i have?

@Jannie *******
Sorry for creating confusion. You will NOT need a matric certificate for your marriage visa. James summed up what you need to do above.

First step is to contact the Thai embassy by phone - everybody speaks excellent English. I would also take a photo of the marriage certificate and send it to the embassy.

It sounds like they will want a certified copy, in which case you will need to send it to Dirco in South Africa - this might take a while. I used an agent to get my docs certified. I can PM you their name if you would like.

But first step is to talk to the people at the Thai embassy in Pretoria: 012 342 5470

I have been told that our marriage should have been registered with the Thai embassy and that they must then give me a certified marriage certificate which I must give to Thailand and it must be then registered in Thailand as well

if that is what you are being told by your Thai Embassy... Then do it.

If it poses a problem then enter Thailand with a tourist visa which gets you 60 days on arrival plus added 30 days extension for 1,900 Thai baht at local immigration office.

Then proceed to get the list of requirements for the non o visa as married to Thai from your Thai immigration office...and followed by the one year extension of stay based on marriage to Thai.

You can register your Thai marriage with a local Amphur.

Or if that is a problem... Simply get married again in Thailand and register it with your Amphur.

I assume that you in fact are still married to your Thai wife and living together when you are in Thailand.

"Or if that is a problem... Simply get married again in Thailand and register it with your Amphur." That does not work. For that both need a certificate clarifying that they are not married!

yes happily married since 2007. But there is no ID for her on the marriage certificate...only her name

- I would say most marriage certs dont have id numbers. For my marriage in the US to be recognized in Thailand, I had to go to US Embassy in Thailand and sign an affidavit that I married my Thai wife in the US. I had to translate that into Thai, and then have it stamped at the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Then I could register my marriage locally at a city office.

Not sure about the getting married twice thing. Don't you need proof from your embassy that you aren't already married to get married in Thailand? Seems like getting the exiting marriage recognized in Thailand is the better way to go.

it’s true, you have to take that certificate to nearest Thai embassy, it will be certified there and bring it to Thailand. ( did the same years back) after Thai embassy certification then make translation to Thailand language when submitting in Thailand ( suggest you do that translation in Thailand cos it must be translated by certify translator) if not u have a lot of merry go round to do

If the Thai Embassy in South Africa will issue you the Non O visa as married to Thai then that will get you 90 days stamp on arrival into Thailand.

During that time you will need to go to your local Thai Immigration office and ask for their list of requirements for the one year extension of stay based on marriage to Thai.

Your Thai wife will need to be with you when you apply for the one year extension of stay as married to Thai.

And Thai immigration will visit you and your wife at your Thailand home address as well as interview neighbors to verify the marriage relationship.

And the 400,000 Thai baht must be placed in a Thai bank account in your name only to qualify for the one year extension of stay as married to Thai.

You will need to meet the requirements for entry into Thailand including the CoE or Thailand Pass per instructions from your Thai Embassy.
