Why was my DTV visa application cancelled so quickly with no explanation?

DTV visa rejected in 24 hours. No explanation.

My DTV application got cancelled within 24 hours of applying from the New Delhi embassy. Set me back by 350 USD. Email reads.

"Your visa application has been cancelled. - The applicant does not meet the qualifications for obtaining the DTV"

Which qualifications?

I do hold more than 2x the required funds of 500k baht. Applied via workation route. Strong 10 year portfolio of work as freelancer in software, applied via workation route.

No questions asked, no follow ups. Just cancelled after charging 350 usd for "processing fee". Response, transparency and effort were all 1 star. Atrocious.

Do I have any recourse? Has the process gotten so brutal recently? Are people applying from other parts of the world facing similar issues? Do soft power activities have better acceptance?
Answer summary
The user's application for a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) was cancelled within 24 hours by the New Delhi embassy without a clear explanation, leading to confusion and frustration. They expressed disbelief over the swift cancellation and the non-refundable processing fee of $350. The community engaged in discussions about potential reasons for the cancellation, including possible biodata mismatches, missing documentation such as a criminal background check, and changes in application rules. Several responses shared similar experiences, suggesting that the cancellation might indicate issues with the application form or requirements not being met. Others recommended contacting the embassy directly for clarification or seeking alternative application strategies.

Contact the consulate and ask them specifically why your application was rejected. If they just rejected it outright without asking for clarification/more documents, it’s simply their way of saying they don’t want you. It sucks and I’m sorry.
Henrik *****
Henrik *****
The Embassy / consulate website will tell, that it is not an option.

They clearly write that there will be given no reasons for applications that are being rejected / cancelled, so you should have known that even before applying.

“Please kindly be informed that consular officers reserve the right to request additional documents as deemed necessary and may reject any application without the obligation to provide justification.”

Your name looks Indian, and since you mentioned the visafee in $ it suggests that you are in US.

You need to apply in your resident country or the application will be rejected.

If that’s not the reason, it is most likely the passport data that are incorrect, which can’t be changed by nor the applicant or the Embassy, resulting in a rejection/ cancellation, and loss of the visafee.

Remember to turn off autocorrection.

“Visa fee is non-refundable, please double check all information before submitting, especially if your device is using auto fill or auto correct. Mismatch information will be rejected as the officers are not able to edit any information entered by the applicant. Applicants will have to re-submit and the Visa fee is non-refundable.”

Do not use agents, They do not know how the Embassy in your resident country processes visa.

Take control of your future life as a responsible adult.

Use the manual in the top right corner of the application website.

Search the group for posts, and include the Embassy name in the search, prioritize posts after

ok bud. They know the general process better than any first-timer, because they have clients form around the world, India included. A lot of people end with lost money due to rejections from cultural differences in understanding the processes.

I’m not saying they HAVE to use an agency, or even THAT agency. But, it definitely makes the process easier. And, if you application gets rejected for any reason, they refund most of your fee. So, it isn’t perfect, but it’s a safer bet for most people who are unfamiliar with navigating this brand of bureaucracy.

The application being cancelled meant it likely did not progress much further after submission. I am thinking it likely was the embassy's judgement on the nature of the OP's work since there wasn't any comment on name, passport, money.

Like the DTV era is over as people envisioned it. You think about it during covid when no one was traveling and they wanted to do something to increase the tourism numbers. People saw it as a 5-year visa and that was never the intent. People signed up for a 2 month or 3 months cooking class or Muay Thai class and then abandon that and thought they could stay for another 4 years. Too many people cause problems and too many scammers and now the restrictions begin. It was never intended to be a 5-year or a two-time 5-year Visa, but too many people saw it as a way to live permanently in Thailand and that was never the intent.

I gave up on the 90 day visa - so complicated with every hotel, flight and travel details needed including entire addresses and booking numbers. You have to have your entire trip planned and booked in every detail. Plus all the other information they require for a simple 6 week tourist visit. I’ll be visiting for 28 days than leaving. I can only see this DTV process hurting the Thai tourist industry with others electing to go to neibouring countries re: Loas / Vietnam. I’m not sure if the Thai government understands that tourists have choices in terms of travel destination. I’ll be going to Vietnam in the new year rather than returning to Thailand primarily based on the DTV process.

No recourse - decision is final & non debatable. Hard to tell really without more information. Are the funds in a savings account in your name? Have they been there for a few months? Did you include the criminal records check? What about your work, they like to see that you are gainfully employed, not a history of work but that you are currently working and earning enough that you will not work in Thailand. A letter from an employer stating that you can work remotely and will not service Thai clients. If self employed, business registration, tax returns, bank statements with proof of invoicing, etc. No point just re-applying, perhaps seek an agent to assist, they can usually tell you where you fall short.

I included a bank account statement which is in my name, my business is registered in Singapore, included registration and latest tax return for the business, my work portfolio and client contract.

Mick *****
Mick *****
@Vineet *******
Anybody that has ever been rejected for any Thai visa would agree with you, an explanation would be ideal. Most embassies that is not their practice, its either approved or it is not and the decision is final. You are then left to try and figure out why you failed. What about the criminal record check, you have not mentioned if that was that included? This is mandatory now and your application will be rejected without it. Understand the process, the first check is performed by an admin officer, not a consular officer. It is a simple check to see if you are eligible for the visa and have submitted the right documents. As you did not make it past this point something was wrong or missing.

Not saying it is right, but just from reading these FB boards for a while it seems to be typical that the Thai consulates worldwide do not give a reason for denying a visa application. Some people email afterwards and carefully and politely ask for feedback saying that they would like to correct any problems before reapplying. I don't know how likely it is that you'll get an informative response, unfortunately.

Usually, if they cancel an application, it means there was a mistake in the form or the information didn’t match the documents. Otherwise, if there’s another reason, they normally reject it. But you can always reapply afterward.

there is a certain "tax" when you live in someone else's country. You don't have the best of the banking system, and get less benefits from your residency status.

It is a little bit far fetched, but this $350 stake belongs to the "expat tax".
Vineet ********

OP
ZestyReindeer3171 calling it a tax is incorrect, I don't live there. This is "processing fee". I have dealt with other embassies, even with a 60-70 usd fee there is a clear indication of what's wrong, how it can be fixed in the current or future application.
Kirk ********************
Kirk ********************
ZestyReindeer3171 It seems like more like a scam than a tax. It's a tax if you give people a chance to correct whatever was wrong with the application. I did not see anywhere advertised it is the cost of the visa.

Thai embassies mention it normally as application processing fee (visa fee)

When you give people who are not able to check if their name and birthdate is entered correct a free possibility to correct, the process will become more expensive for others.
Kirk ********************
Kirk ********************
@Luit ****************
“ Why should people have a FREE chance to correct their errors.”

What a strange bootlicking question.😂 If the fee is a processing fee they should advertise it as such but they don’t. It is advertised as the cost of the visa. You and I both know it does not cost $350 US to process one of these applications. So that’s a ridiculous statement. If China can process their visa applications in a professional and fair way, so can Thailand. They just choose not to.

Don’t get me started on all the Africans who apply for standard visas only to be rejected with no explanation. They’re taking fees from these people with no intention of approving the applications.
Luit *****************
Luit *****************
@Kirk *******************
Why should people have a FREE chance to correct their errors.

Everybody warns to prevent mismatches in names, birthdates etc.

When you are not eligible for the visa with the documents you did send them, it is not some kind of trial on error system where you can send in changed documents to get approved.

The documents you send in should reflect your situation, so how could the be changed to be eligible for the visa?

When something is missing, or they want more documents they normally ask for.

The fee is for the process, that is what cost money, not the PDF they send.
