Inquiry for DTV visa cancellation process

I’m planning to apply for a Non-Immigrant B visa for work.

Currently, I hold a DTV visa issued by the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

I’ve tried to check the DTV cancellation process:

♦️I asked immigration officers in Chiang Mai, but they said they aren’t fully sure. They told me my DTV will be automatically cancelled when I enter Thailand with a new visa from outside the country.

♦️I also emailed the Phnom Penh Thai Embassy for clarification but haven’t received any reply.

⚠️Recently, I applied for a Non-B visa in Laos, but my application was cancelled (as shown in the screenshot).

They said "my passport bio page image was unclear, even after I re-submitted it in JPEG format.

and in addition you still have DTV and IB visa issued from Thailand Embassy in Phnom Penh. Please contact them to cancel them before you entering Thailand with a new visa. "

Is there anything I can do here in Laos to resolve the DTV visa issue, without needing to travel back to the Thai Embassy in Phnom Penh for cancellation?

But Phnom Penh Thailand embassy hasn’t replied to my emails, and I am currently in Laos.

For context, my visa history is:

1st Non-B → then DTV in cambodia, Phnom Penh→ now applying for Non-B in Laos, Vientiane.

So I’m wondering:

👉 Has anyone experienced the same issue when switching from DTV to Non-B visa?

👉 Is there anything I should prepare or be careful about regarding the DTV cancellation or passport submission before applying my non b visa again ?

Any information or advice would be really appreciated. Thank you! 🙏

You don’t need to cancel your DTV separately in advance anywhere. In practice, you have two options: either get a Non-B visa abroad and enter Thailand with that, or enter Thailand on your DTV and then change your visa type to Non-B through Immigration in Thailand.

In my case, I went with First option. It is failed in my first attempt as per screenshot email.

For the second option, as far as i know, I can't change dtv to non B at immigration within Thailand.

BrightCranberry5804 In the first case you were dealing with incompetent embassy staff; in the second, the information you have is incorrect.

If for any reason you are not satisfied with my comment, you can pay a consultation fee of 5,000 THB and I will set out all the applicable regulations for this visa in your situation. All of this is clearly described and documented.

You already have the information you need. What you choose to do with it is your decision.

I have successfully gone through this process with another embassy.

To cancel the DTV, you contact the original issuing embassy, they then contact some authority in Thailand who voids the visa in the e-visa system.

If the original embassy isn’t helping you then I’m not sure what the plan B is, aside from using maybe an agent with the right contacts? (They need to get in touch with the e-visa authority in Thailand).

Good luck, sounds stressful.

In your process, is dtv cancellation process first ?

I tried to contact to Thailand embassy in Phnom penh cambodia. I can't contact via phone and email.

There's also the situation about conflict between Thailand and cambodia.

I asked to some visa agents.

There are Agents that can help non b visa apply ,but they are not sure about cancellation process.

Should I try with visa agents for the next time non b visa again?

Only the embassy that issued the visa can cancel the visa, and you can’t apply/receive a new visa when you currently have a valid one. It is an area that isn’t fully understood

Because the DTV is technically only a tourist visa, you need to apply for the B visa, then leave the country and re-enter with the B visa. The DTV will automatically expire once you do so.

He is saying they will not issue a B until DTV cancelled so your scenario is not possible

It’s essentially the same. You cannot cancel a visa, but you can apply for a different one and then enter the country with that new visa—this is something the embassy should also be aware of. There are plenty of people who come here on a tourist visa and then switch to a work visa, and this is especially common with ED visas.

As an example when I moved from "O" to "B" the O had to be cancelled before Embassy would process B. I had to apply for B outside Thailand. This was for a BOI "B" Executive Visa for a large Japanese company that had been BOI for 45 years and many Visas and WP over that time. so 1) old visa cancelled first 2) apply outside Thailand - no switching allowed even for BOI 3) All paperwork done by internal HR with many years of experience in these matters

Of course you can cancel a visa - I did it. People are saying they cannot get a visa issued while another "Live". I could not do that from O to B.. Tourist to B you leave the country in most cases to get B so not switching. Same with Ed. Have you ever changed visas? What sort of job?

Will the company you want to work with issue the paperwork to apply for the Non-B inside Thailand? If so you can in theory apply to convert your DTV to a Non-B at an immigration office inside Thailand. Note convert and not cancel the DTV, although I'm not aware of anyone having gone through the process it stated in the Royal Gazette entry announcing the DTV that this was available

@Rico **********
I don't believe it will as it is a multiple entry visa

I'm planning to do so. But in my case -my non b visa application in laos got cancelled as in screenshot email.

I'm not sure what should be the first process.

You cannot hold two valid visas so it is imperative that you get your DTV cancelled first. usually only the issuing authority can cancel a visa, but perhaps you can contact the MFA directly for clarification.

To be fair to Immigration in Chiang Mai they probably have very little guidance about the DTV. It is not an Immigration Department Visa - it is MFA. I read one post on here where someone claimed they had the DTV cancelled in Thailand through an agency - no doubt it included a service fee. There are other reports that only the issuing authority can cancel ie MFA and then only where it was issued - in your case Cambodia. Good luck with it. It took me 2 trips to Singapore to get a "B" from an "O". Hope you get yours sorted without too much hassle.

according to the news, there's border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia.

I cannot also contact to Phnom Penh Thailand embassy via email and phone.

Currently having no idea to reach out.

BrightCranberry5804 Yes, the border clashes are ongoing, but the land border between Thailand and Cambodia has been closed for months. It may be possible to fly but I would not go right now anyway. The Embassy will have other priorities rather than dealing with visas right now.

Do you mean I should go and cancel to Cambodia for cancelling dtv .

FYI, now I'm in laos.
Greg ********
BrightCranberry5804 I cannot advise you on that. When I had to cancel "O" to get "B" I had to go to the Immigration Office who issued it. I asked at BKK Airport but they said the visa and re-entry could only be cancelled by who issued it. It was the "Re-entry" Permit that caused the issues for me they said. If I dod not have the multi for the year it would cancel automatically when I left. The DTV is a completly different situation. Hope you get it all sorted out
