Why are visa applications being rejected at the Hanoi Embassy despite correct documentation?

Jan 9, 2026
It appears that the Hanoi Embassy is rejecting applications even when the documents are correct. If possible, I would advise people not to apply for a visa at the Hanoi Embassy, as it seems they are rejecting applications without properly reviewing the documents.

TLDR : Answer Summary
There are concerns among expats regarding the Hanoi Embassy's handling of visa applications, with multiple reports of rejections occurring even when applicants believed their documents were correct. Some users suggest the embassy may be scrutinizing applications more closely, while others argue that the embassy has previously been known for an easier application process. Experiences vary widely, with some users sharing successful visa approvals while others report sudden rejections without explanations. This has led to a heated discussion about the reliability of the embassy and the quality of application submissions.

I just received my DTV workcation visa in Hanoi. I applied on Thursday morning, provided additional document which they requested the same day, and the visa email arrived on Sunday. So I am pretty happy with the process 🙌

100% correct, not sure there are much better options these days either but for anyone who believes you will surely get approved as long as you simply fulfill the criteria, this simply isnt the case anymore.

Can supprt this claim.

I used an agency that has over 90% success rate.

I applied for my partner independently a day before the agency applied for my self. I got rejected 2 days after submission and payment completion. Hers was approved today. I am more than sure that I have all the required documents and aligned with all their respected threaholds. The agency can say the same.

Kind remark; Me and my partner obtain different nationalities and I think it falls under this matter.

I also think about nationality and nowadays Hanoi embassy concerned about which nationality passport and approve depends on that.

Whether you believe it or not is up to you. As for me, I can provide solid proof, but I choose not to. Instead of taking risks in Hanoi, I’d simply recommend choosing another place.

wiser isn't the right word.....its not like they didn't know what was happening right from the beginning that people might not or don't have to attend classes......but maybe tightening and disallowing some nationalities they deem unworthy for whatever reason. BUT anyway....visa requirments are laid out.....if you give all documents you should be approved. No offense.....If your passport is from a 3rd world country you obviously have a lot less chance though....places like algeria etc Thai Authorities are probably cracking down on French Arabs since they seem to be the no 1 cause of trouble in thailand

Wiser was used in broad terms, and Thai immigration rules are subtle. The point is - some things seem to becoming subject to a little more scrutiny. I personally think rightly.

I would suggest they are reviewing documents and applications thoroughly, weeding out those just trying to stay in Thailand continuously for 5 years.

a 10 year US tourist visa (B-2 Visitor Visa) does not let you stay continuously in the US for 10 years. You get 6 months per entry, but it is for tourism and there is a rule of thumb that they expect you to be out for at least as long as you are in. You can't just "border bounce" to extend it.

Working remotely is also legally prohibited, beyond incidentals (like checking an email). DTV is explicitly offered for working remotely.

For now, you CAN stay 5 years on a DTV, as long as you leave every 6 months you can come back immediately, and you can keep that up for the duration of the visa. May change, but that is how it's working so far.

Glad this is Thailand then, and a Thai visa we're talking about. Not everything needs to be aligned or compared to what the USA do, fortunately.

Jan is talking specifically about US 10 year tourist visas, if you follow his link. He's misunderstanding what the US offers with a "10 year visa", it's not a 10 year license to stay there continuously, it just means you can visit the US as a tourist for short stays over a 10 year period. It's mostly for nationalities who don't get the visa waiver anyway.

While currently, a DTV holder IS allowed to border bounce every 6 months to effectively get 5 years continuous.
