TLDR : Answer Summary
Many expats and locals in Thailand are questioning when the mandatory mask-wearing outside will be lifted. Comments suggest varied opinions, with some expecting restrictions to continue indefinitely due to air pollution concerns. While some report few individuals wearing masks outside, particularly in tourist areas like Patong, others emphasize adherence to regulations. Discussions highlight the cultural acceptance of mask-wearing in Thailand even prior to COVID-19, pointing to ongoing debates about compliance and health safety.

Hilarious when Thai's not wearing a mask inside a restaurant gawk at you while you're outside without a mask on𤣠not only is this hypocritical but it is profoundly illogical, implying that I am a public health risk when outdoor transmission is virtually impossible and indoor transmission is where all cases originate.

There are few outdoor masks in Italy these days. đ
Europe is moving towards a âliving with the virusâ model. Asia stands alone in trying to eradicate it.

Lots of people also have been wearing masks even before covid because of PM 2.5 so I doubt that people will stop anytime soon. It's just the normal to wear a mask everytime you go out these days

I would expect that to be the norm for a while as well. I was always told that wearing the mask is a courtesy to others if you have a cough or sniffles. You would see several asians wearing them on long haul flights way before the pandemic. So this will be a BIG courtesy for a while.
I remember the first time my guide in Phnom Phen stopped and bought me one and said wear it because the road gets dusty. I had never worn one, and took a pic to show my friends, but was glad he had thought of it.

I think the people who own mask factories or import them are "well connected" and are part of the gravy train... I think they will find many reasons to continue to need them.. similar to emergency decrees... đ¤
if anyone in power was listening to science a lot would be different... however my thought is there is some self interest involved in many decisions.. in Thailand that does seem to happen... there have been many instances where officials explain the unjustifiable in simple ways with a smile.. and possibly are motivated by brown envelopes... so whether ecologists wake up or not doesn't always matter....self interest and profiteering can simply motivate official people to continue doing the same.. like a bad movie...

What's the obsession with certain farang men wanting to show their ugly mug and scare the rest of us. COVID or not please keep it covered. Ugh.
Are you so beautiful that you can call "certain ferang men ugly " ? Show us a photo of your face then.

Known by who ? What scientific data can you show to validate your absurd opinion.Anyway - where is a photo of your face ? I want to see which camp you are in.
If you go outside of Bangkok/big cities, no need for masks. In Samui, next to the ferry most people wear masks and then the more away you go, the less masks you see.
If youâre in BKK or any big city, just drink bubble tea or something and no one will bother you.
I personally think that the more people stop wearing it, the better it will be (influence?) and those who choose to wear it can just go along with their lives and let other breathe freely⌠đ
And I walked without masks in front of a bunch of cops before some people told me about âticketsâ and they didnât care⌠even without the boba tea.
Anutin is a racist clown. The law was certified in the Royal Gazette in June 2021. This article goes through it and let's not forget, the PM was fined 6,000 baht for not wearing a mask.
99% of people in Chiang Rai wears it and no one is complaining, especially the locals. Obligated or not, thats a different story. But people wear it here without a fuss. I dont think Asians would complain, and if they do, they are on a handful.
i was here way before covid started. Locals here do not wear masks 6 months a year. They wear it when its reaply severe, ie. visibility not more than 10 meters. Thailand as whole has no problem wearing a mask, Ive notived that it is 'fashion' to some. Or after getting a nose job. Or some sh!t like that. I have never met a thai telling me they have a problem in wearing a mask. It is only the foreigners that are making a big hoo haa out of it. I would love to see farangs go bark at the relevant authorities rather than doing it here on facebook.
I am sure they hate it. Itâs 30 degrees outside. In Samui, when no one is around, all shop staffs donât wear it and when we show up, they put it (for the looks?) even if we donât wear it. Then they put it off again when we leave.
wtf is talking about samui? You clearly cant read and you clearly have not been here. Talk is cheap. Show evidence that Chiang Rai people 'hate' wearing masks. Just because farangs bark about wearing masks does not mean thais do the same.
I was just talking about the situation in Samui. I'm guessing the people from Chiang Rai enjoy the mask and the people from Samui don't like it. Yesterday I went to a hotel/restaurant and none of the staff was wearing it, no one cares about it.
bahahahahahahahahahaha! What a clown. You must entered a brothel instead of a well established hotel. A thin fine line, but there is a difference. And my inutial post was talking about chiang rai, not that god forsaken place called samui.
are you one of those who think an unvaccinated will infect you? Damn you should look at stats from Canada where all cases are from double and triple vaccinated. Unvaccinated are harmless, unless you think your dose isnât working?
again, stop putting words in my mouth because I called you out on your bs. Wgo said anything about winter bringing severe illness or death? Which side of your ear heard me saying that? Now after all the work researchers put and and has come to a conclusion that vaccines will reduce severity of the virus in most people, you come along with a Leo beer in your hand and claim that vaccines do nothing. The burden of proof is on you, no one else. And again, no one said vaccines will stop you from getting infected. You clearly do not understand the bs comin out of your own mouth.
you stated that wearing masks didnt help. Show evidence that wearing masks dont break the travel. You implied that vaccines dont stop you from getting infected, vaccines dont do that and it only reduces the chances of dying from the effects of the virus. Show me hard numbers that the vaccine isnt helping in reducing deaths or severity from the effects of the virus. The burden of proof is upon you, not me, not all the researchers that did all the work. Show evidence or what you are saying is nothing better than hot air. Talk is cheap. And so is barking.
prove it. Thailand has been wearing masks for over two years. It just is.
I see you deleted your previous post that claimed that anyone who wears a mask is in your words "a moron." Even before COVID, mask wearing when unwell was normal here.
The standard idiotic response by someone who has been made to look stupid. What does 'whatever " mean ? In any event, please continue to wear your mask, look like an alian, and safeguard nobody.
do you ever stop and think, why am I really doing this? Does it help? Does it make sense? Itâs fun to critically analyze stuff sometimes. I like thinking for myself⌠I consider it my own personal responsibility. Everyoneâs different I suppose. Have an awesome day đ

Yeah the single-use masks people wear for weeks. Taking them on and off with their filthy hands⌠itâs all for appearances folks. Be a good boy/girl and wear your face diaper. What a joke.
There is fast approaching no incentive to come to Thailand. People will start looking elsewhere , as the UK and Europe start to move on, places like Pattaya are ghost towns. IV got a wife and 3 kids here . If I was a tourist Thailand would be well down the list of places I would visit. IV been coming here 24 years, the visa system has become very hard to stay. It's no incentive to try a 4 week holiday to find u may spend most of it looking at 4 walls. There seems no end to live with covid in Thailand.
Al let u into a secret don't tell anyone. Every single person will have covid in there lifetime. If u don't believe that there is no hope for us if u think I'm wrong. If you think paper masks stop a virus spreading
the big down side is if u come in and test positive on day 1 or day 5 your put in hospital at your expense. Most Thais are getting Omicron and recovering quickly but if u get it Ur holiday is spent in hospital and it will be expensive . Not many insurance companies will cough up especially if you have no symptoms. PCR tests very very difficult to book in Pattaya, so many testing.
it's not a holiday, I travel constantly working remotely. I'm just looking for a nice relaxing spot for a couple of months, maybe three in SE Asia and I enjoyed my previous experience in Thailand, so I thought I'd come back for a little stay.
I recall that concern about expenses if I test positive, I guess I'll have to get a good insurance if I decide to come. I'm also concerned that my vaccines may not be accepted for whatever reason. I don't know what proof of vaccination they require.
(Having no tourists around sounds good to me too. đ)
masks or no masks, tourism in Thailand is finished until quarantine, masks, covid insurance is ditched. That's just a fact, I'm not saying I'm right about Thailand restrictions being right or wrong. But there will be no improvement on tourism until they are lifted. Many baht bus... Market traders... Small and large businesses.. motorbike taxi... All now closed for good. Look at the q,s for free food. If u have 3 vaccine jabs and u won't open Ur in trouble. UK open fully .. testing has come to a end , Europe will follow.
Agree, it will be years to overcome the effect on thai's and tourism. Used to travel freely between provinces and smiles, no longer freely, and few smiles.
We all do what we can. Thai's handling this better than most.

There is actually apparently no law or order that says they must be worn. The health minister was asked about the âlawâ specifically and he didnât even know what the reporter was talking about.
itâs funny you donât know there is⌠thatâs incorrect. And fine up to 20k baht. Doesnât mean itâs enforced. But if they want to fine you, they sure will
itâs funny though that most people think there is. In fact even most of the police think there is.
Itâs kinda like the âinternational drivers licenseâ thing.
The fact is there is no law in Thailand that you need an International Driving Permit. Just that you need a license. The IDP is just a translation of your actual license. Try telling that to a Thai police officer though. The ticket they write you is for not having a license and is exactly the same as the ticket they would write to a Thai for not having their license. Itâs not a ticket for not having a IDP. Itâs just become so commonly believed and accepted that even the police are convinced that if you donât have your IDP that thatâs equivalent to not having a license. And so they write you a ticket.
itâs definitely not everyone on Koh Samui. In fact itâs less than 10%⌠since day 1 of Covid. Donât be sad. Itâs a 1000 times better here than the dumpster fire you left! Enjoy
i understand man. Really. I thought it was horrible 9 years ago. And expected some version of this. I wonât be back. The world is full of wonder, happy u came to a place like this
Masks are unnatural. They are an environmental hazard and basically useless. They shield a person's identity. You want to wear N 95 for pollution. Be my guest. But you will die anyway. I will never compromise my standard of living wearing that shit. If this means I will live shorter so be it. Who cares anyway?
Marc Proksch ok mask u should go back to where u came from. Thai people are alot of things but they aren't stupid to the point of not realising cloth will stop shit from going into your airways.
So you've just claimed that 99.9% of Thais here are morons because they comply with the law and wear masks. That's even before I get to expats. Good for you - why the F are you here in Thailand again if you hate most people?
I know it is the law but I cant stand them and yes I break the laws in my own country if I think they suck. There is no mask that fits my face. I hate them and will refuse to wear them. This is not Ebola ok?
proper masks are not useless at all - N95 and equivalent give you protection. Peer-reviewed, scientific fact. Cloth masks in the U.S. were always a joke, however. And as presuming you're in Thailand - it's the law. Would you break laws in your own country?
If you find maks "uncomfortable," buy a mask that fits your face and provides proper protection - not rocket science. And again - Thai law.
It was certified as a law in the Royal Gazette in June 2021 - the PM was fined 6,000 baht for not wearing a mask under the law - those are both facts. This Thaiger article runs through it well and read carefully what that racist clown Anutin actually said.
I live 20km on the outskirts of Chiang Mai - everyone wears a mask without fail. This isn't August 2020 when there were no new cases and people got lax.
not in Chiang Mai Province in mass. I thought it had early Feb. and then it went weird. If you're looking at the broader region, Myanmar has had a fire fest for the better part of a month.
All the stats for CM are publicly available. I've showed you my summary graph - all the CM data is publicly available and again - this is a weird February.
Except that your claim is not true. Does rain help - it always does, but statistically the number of fires dropped days before it started raining. I have no idea why and I've mentioned that on CMNIE in previous posts but its a provable fact that can be backed up by publicly available data.
You'd be surprised - there's got to be maybe 10k farang expats, maybe more that are still here and lasted through COVID. Tourists are few and far between. Everywhere I go as a farang I always see other farangs around.
Also burning season hasn't started. Here's the current daily fire count for Feb. It will start but look outside - this is the weirdest February ever. Not just rain - the burning dropped before the rain.
When you decide to do your part and stop wearing it. 2 years and 2 vaccines later if your body cant fight covid its probably your time.

That wonât be happening for a long time. If ever. Wearing masks for Thais hasnât ever been an issue. Indeed in many parts of Thailand they were used way before covid because of smog or the burning season up in Chiang Mai.
He asked. I offered my opinion. Whether theyâll eventually drop the requirement will depend on many factors, but if they believe itâs harming the Thai economy perhaps they will. The Thais generally donât have an issue with it, just the foreigners.
As long as the Thais accept that most fellang do not want to wear masks - then OK. What is sad is that there is NO evidence that they do anything to stop the virus, but their government will continue to scare them into wearing them- even on a motorbike !!! When we will look back at photos of ourselves in 10 years time wearing the stupid things !!!
yep. They wear a mask to protect them from covid which almost certainly wonât kill them, but donât wear a helmet which if they crash statistically will.
