What's the deal with the six month METV from Kuala Lumpur? Has anyone successfully gotten this? Is it a full six month visa, no extensions? I'm an American going to Malaysia for a new SETV but see my application has this option. Weighing it.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The six-month Multi-Entry Tourist Visa (METV) can be obtained from the Thai consulate in Kuala Lumpur, even though it is commonly believed that it must be applied for in one's home country. Applicants need to show a necessity for the multiple entries, which often involves providing itineraries and proof of accommodation. Each entry allows a stay of 60 days, after which a border run is typically required to reset the stay. There are stringent financial requirements, including maintaining a bank balance of approximately £5200 (30,000 Ringgit). Some recent applicants have reported success, provided they present the necessary documentation.

@No**
, did they accept your application for the 6 month METV yesterday?

I didn't apply for it because we're a family of three and this thread had me concerned that METV was harder to get as a family. Didn't want to risk it or lose the cash.

@Dori ******
, I tagged you in this thread because you got the 6 month METV from KL recently. People were wondering what you told them as far as "needing" that visa versus a single entry one..
Ron *******
Oh dear.
Ron *******
Maybe make your post clearer then instead of just stating you can't afford to lose 3x ME visa fees.

a toddler does not require bank statements. 🤣

You are now looking at needing 3 separate bank accounts showing the required balance for 6 months in each account. I doubt they will issue 3 ME Visas on one bank account.

I would not use my family as a reason for requiring METV. It's my personal incentive but not what I would present to the Thai embassy. My circumstance is unique. Not sure I'm going to try for it or not.

Dori Opitz risky! I can't afford to lose 750 MYR x3 for all of us. Ugh. I'll think on it. Heading to KL on Sunday.
Dori *******
Noël Lindquist that was the risk I was taking. You have to sign that they have the right to refuse your visa and keep your 750MYR. I didn't know what would happen. I had two applications ready but the told me on the day I applied that it is all fine for the MEvisa. So I was hoping they would not change their mind overnight. And the next day I literally just picked up my passport with my receipt. So I don't know .. I reckon they will tell you when you apply and then you can just fill out another form for SEvisa
Tod *********
@No**
, If you tick all the boxes like
@Do**
, did I imagine it'll work just fine. If they don't think you "need" a METV I'm sure they'll issue you with a single entry one.
Dori *******
@Tod ********
ok sorry i was misinformed, that is good to know. Thanks
Tod *********
you're a little off on the land crossings twice a year
@Dori ******
, :/

If you hold a valid multi-entry visa you can cross any land border to activate another entry and are not limited to just two crossings in a year. That's only if you are using a land border to get a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp..

good point. It's me, my mum and my toddler. I may just try for it anyway but will they give me SETV if they deny me METV? Oh so many questions.
Dori *******
@Noël **********
yes Apply one day (go early tho as queue before even open and they have a quota for each day) and pick up the next afternoon. Yes u exit every 60 days or apply for an extension at local immigration. You can do one day boarder crossing. Land crossing only twice a year I believe. But you can get many cheap flights too to leave for a day or two. It's cheaper in the long as you don't have to fly to cities and apply for visa every

month. Not sure how ME will work for a family tho.
Tod *********
@No**
, I would weigh in and say, telling them you have a family here is NOT the most compelling reason to give you a tourist visa. To me that means you're most definitely NOT a tourist.

As far as the Mae Sai - Tachiliek border with burma, you can border bounce there without a problem

@Dori ******
thank you for the information!!! Did you get it in two days like the SETV? You have to exit every 60 days but can this be done in Mae Sai within the same day? I have everything but a letter saying I need ME. Mostly I have a family and it may be easier to do this than two back to back SETV with three RT flights out and back.
Dori *******
Need to have flights in and out of Thailand over more then 3 month I would say. I got the visa a week ago and i had bookings till January.. I had a spreadsheet with my travelplans ( I booked some cheap flights that I need for visarun anyway and places that I want to see) and accommodation bookings.

I said I am having a travel year and still want to see more of Asia
Dori *******
Hi guys.. sorry I just saw this.. yep.. I just followed the check list and had paperwork for everything. I booked some flights for the next few month, had a booking for a weekend in Bangkok and a rental agreement for the next 5 month in Thailand.

Got the money in the bank and a letter from my employer (needed it in uk and KL doesnt request it but it did help)

They told me I can only get it once from KL tho, but yes I should be good for a while now.

Yes please weigh in Dori!

6 months of having a Bank balance of at least £5200 (30,000 Ringat) is going to knock a few out of the game.

Here is their checklist with requirements, print it out, check the boxes, sign it and take it with you when you apply for the Visa:

I'm going to drop them an email in the next week or so in respect of getting a new METV with a view to popping over in about 3 weeks if positive (I too am curious what I need to provide to prove I need an METV - I'm not going to book a shed load of flights in the hope I'll get one). I'll update on progress.
Charlotte *******
I'll create a smart looking itinerary and print it off!
Tod *********
The poster who got approved there sure didn't make it seem like they did all that much really.
Amornrat **********
If that would be the case, METV in KL, it would be breaking news on thaivisa and their mother company.
Tod *********
I think because Penang won't do them and for the longest time KL was hard as nails on single entry tourist visas that people just don't bother to even go to the website and check OR try there for a tourist visa at all.
Charlotte *******
Yes, the silence on other forums does concern me!
Jeremy ********
I was under the impression that you could only get the 6 month METV from your home country and a 6 month SETV from any Thai Embassy/Consulate
Jeremy ********
@Andrew ******
that Makes sense as well
Andrew *******
Not just home country. Also country of residence. I am British but work in Hk. And have a Hong Kong id. That will work
Jeremy ********
That’s good information to know ...
Tod *********
There was a report on here where someone got a 6 month METV from the thai consulate in Kuala Lumpur because they do not have the 'must hold legal residence in the country you're applying" clause for that visa like most consulates do.
Ron *******
The need for several flights and accomodation booking sounds interesting. Seems too by the post you have to 'Prove' a need for it.
Tod *********
Be interesting to see what he reports back
Tod *********
@Noël **********
, you're out nothing by trying it (y) I mean face it the worst that will happen is they only issue you a single entry one.

Do let us know what happens. okay?

Will do. Heading to KL on Monday.

@Tod ********
woah. Game changer.
Tod *********
@No**
, to coin a phrase; smooth as silk ;) using that border to bounce in and out of (y)
Noël ***********
ORIGINAL POSTER
Tod Daniels bloody hell! This is smooth sailing at Mae Sai border crossing? Meaning walk out and walk back in an hour later?
Tod *********
@No**
. The way that visa works is it allows unlimited entries into thailand for the validity of the visa itself (6 months from the date of issue) and each time you enter you're stamped in for 60 days. At the end of that 60 days you border bounce <-stamp out of thailand, stamp in&out of another country and stamp right back into thailand to get another 60 day stamp. People who time the bounces right can wring almost 9 months of stay out of that visa.
Noël ***********
ORIGINAL POSTER
Tod Daniels so what's the point of a METV? You get 6 months but you have to depart every 2? And what if you don't depart?
Noël ***********
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Robert ******
so says your generation. 🤣
Tod *********
There is only a single entry tourist visa OR a 6 month METV multi-entry tourist visa. There is NO tourist visa that lets you stay in country longer than 60 days at a time.
Robert *******
It's a hard live, we can not always get what we want.

Here is the post: Dori Opitz

September 15 at 8:34am

Just to let you know it was possible to get a multiple entry tourist visa from Kuala Lumpur. A lot of people have wondered about it and said that you can only get it in you home country. I have a German passport and live in the Uk and my old ME visa (i got in London) had just ran out. They told me I can only get it once tho.

But it was pretty seamless as long as you have all the paperwork and several flights and accommodation booked so that you can show a need for multiple entry. They were very nice and all went smoothly.
Robert *******
Few days ago we had a post with a succes story. HE got the METV in KL. The METV is valid for 6 months and each entry gives you 60 days admitted to stay, he had to proof all the requirements as mentioned on the check list.
