Hello from Ireland. I have been offered a job in Thailand and just wanted some advice. The company have told me that I need a non b visa and work permit. They say this will cost me 12,800 bhat. They want a scanned copy of my passport and two passport photos for immigration. Would immigration not need my original? Also if I wait until I arrive would I have to leave the country to process It? Do it only take between 4-5 working days to process?

Sorry for all the questions. It's a huge move for me and just want everything right. Thanks in advance.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual from Ireland has received a job offer in Thailand and needs advice regarding the Non-B visa and work permit process. They were quoted a cost of 12,800 baht for the visa and were uncertain about requiring original documents for immigration. Comments from the community clarified that the actual cost of a Non-B visa is about 2,000 baht and that it is a red flag if the employer processes these without the original passport. It is generally recommended to enter Thailand on a tourist visa and then apply for the Non-B visa through a Thai consulate or immigration office, depending on the situation.

As a rule, you come to thailand on a tourist visa or a visa exempt entry, your employer gives you paperwork to take to a thai consulate in a nearby country and get a single entry, 90 day Non-Immigrant Type B visa

OR

you come in as I outlined and then you go to the immigration office with paperwork from your company and apply for a 90 day Non-B visa inside the country.

yep, it's just many companies cannot meet the documentation requirements inside the country to go from a visa exempt or tourist visa to a 90 day Non-B so they send their employees to a thai consulate in a neighboring country because the requirements are lower..

you get 90 days then you take documentation from your company to the immigration office and apply for a yearly extension of stay.

Plus the fact that they would 'process' things without your passport is a massive red flag.

It most definitely will NOT cost 12,800 baht. A Non-B visa (gotten inside or outside of thailand) is about 2000baht. Applying for a year work permit is about 3900baht I believe. So you're UNDER 6000baht all in..

, BUT you can't get a year-long, multi-entry Non-B inside the country :/

You can only get them at a thai consulate in another country.

Non-B, 2000 baht. Work permit, 3100 baht.

Non-B extension based on a WP, 1900 (90-days to 1 year. )

The process will vary a bit depending on the job - I am assuming you are being hired as an employee and not a "business partner".

Typically, if you enter as a tourist you can process the non-B paperwork here and IF you have 15 days remaining on your period of stay, do a change of status from tourist to non-B.

IF you are short of time you can hop to a Thai consulate in a nearby country and process your non-B there.

IF someone is charging you 12,800 it would be a red-flag to me that you are being scammed.

, what you people down south pay is just crazy compared to what it really costs. But that division is run like the wild west. :(

It is my experience that many companies actually PAY for the visa and work permit on their employees NOT charge them inflated fees to provide the documentation :/

Service fee for the company lawyer to assist the process , sounds legit to set up paperwork , in the south you pay about 18k just for the wp the visa plus visa fee is about 20k too here
