TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about the renewal of their Non-Immigrant O visa, which is tied to their marriage to a Thai citizen, before a planned 4-month trip back to the US. Various comments suggest that visa extensions can typically be applied for 30 to 45 days before expiration at local immigration offices. However, if unable to return before the visa expiration, the user should apply for a new Non-Imm O visa at a Thai embassy in the US, ensuring they have the necessary documents. Additionally, obtaining a re-entry permit is recommended to return to Thailand in time for the visa renewal process.

in case your extension expires because you cannot return in time, make sure to follow Piet de Keizer 's advice: you will have to apply for a new Non-Imm-O based on marriage at the Thai embassy or consulate in the USA, so make sure you have all required documents with you

I agree to be prepared for a new Non-O in the US in case. But OP also may be able to enter Thailand on visa-exempt and apply in-country Non-O..

just a question on my behalf, can I do said conversion to a Non-Imm-O based on being over 50/retirement as well ? Just curious because my extension of stay based on retirement becomes invalid by January 4th, 2022, and I am considering going back to my home country for urgent business. So in case I can do the conversion, it is less of a drama if I let my extension expire

yes, it is an option as well. Entering Thailand on visa-exempt or tourist visa, and apply for in-country Non-O and one-year extension later based on being over 50.

ah, okay. I totally forgot this option. Inside Thailand "conversion" to a "Non-Imm-O visa based on marriage to a Thai" out of a visa exempt entry or a 60-days tourist visa

get a re-entry permit and make sure you return to Thailand 4 weeks prior to October 30th. It might then be still a 14-days quarantine, allowing you 2 weeks to apply for the next annual extension of stay

Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Buriram, Phuket, Chiang Rai and a couple other ones (Surat Thani/Samui maybe) all allow people to apply for extensions when they have 45 days or less left on their current stamp. Most others allow for 30 days.

Immigration offices can allow exceptions if needed.
