What should I consider for renewing my non-O visa if I'm outside Thailand when it expires?

In May, my non-O visa (married to Thai citizen) will be done and I will need to get a renewal for another one. If I am out of the country at this time, are there any issues that I need to be aware of? Or any steps I can take when I return (or before I return) to make getting my non-O visa easier?

TLDR : Answer Summary
When your non-O visa (for being married to a Thai citizen) expires while you are outside Thailand, you'll need to plan accordingly to avoid complications. If your extension of stay expires while you are away, you won't be able to renew it from outside the country and will have to apply for a 90-day Non-O visa upon your return to Thailand, which can either be done in advance at a Thai consulate or upon arrival. It is crucial to check the specific conditions of your current visa stamp to determine your options for extending your stay.

I think you've got your wires crossed. There is no requirement to leave the country and come back to 'renew' anything.

LOOK in your passport at your stamp, does it say "extension of stay permitted until" and have a date on it? If so you can apply for a NEW yearly extension by meeting the proof of funds and turning in the required documents at your immigration office for 1900baht.

IF you decide NOT to get another extension before you leave the country and the current one expires while you're outside thailand, you start ALL over, getting a 90 day Non-O visa (which you can do before you come back at the thai consulate in the country you're in) and then applying for a year extension

If you're extension of stay expires while out of the country you need to start over. Either get a relevant Non-O before you come back or do it in Thailand but you need to meet the requirements

why leave the country? You can extend inside Thailand without leaving but you have to be on the last 30 (or in some cases 45) days of your current stay. So a lot is going to depend on the date you leave and the date you return
