My current Thai non immigrant o marriage visa expires on December 31st.

I am planning to be out of the country over Christmas, leaving thailand around December 18 and returning early January. I haven’t booked my flights yet.

I wanted to ask when I can apply in person for the visa, and what the smartest way of negotiating this process is.

Thanks so much for your advice as always.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquires about applying for an extension of their Thai non-immigrant O marriage visa before traveling for Christmas. They are advised that visa extensions can typically be applied for 30 to 45 days before expiry and to consult their local Thai immigration office for specific guidelines, as a home visit may be required for their visa type. Additionally, it is suggested they apply for a re-entry permit concurrently with their extension request, ensuring their travel plans don't conflict with visa validity.

Adam Sharpe, as there is a 30 day under consideration period with your type of visa extension , then you need to apply for a re- entry permit at the same time you go to your IO to request the extension. The RP will be dated until 30 days after your current visa extension period expires when you explain your circumstances to Immigration. So the RP. So that should be 30th January 2023. You arrive back after that date and the RP is invalid.

brings up a very good point,

IF you are going to apply for your yearly extension based on marriage to a thai you will get a 30 day under consideration stamp AND if during that time (before you get your year extension inked in) you need to exit the country you will need to get a re-entry permit (which will be valid ONLY during the under consideration stamp) and you need to be back in thailand before that date runs out or you would lose everything and have to start over from zero (getting a new Non-O and then a new year extension)

thank you everyone this is most helpful. From what I’ve heard the thailand immigration office allows applications 45 days in advance of the expiry date. So if my non o expires on December 31st, I would consider applying for visa extension on November 16th, hopefully get my new visa on December 16th, leave the country by December 18th.

- you wont receive a new visa extension stamp until 30 days after your last one expires and you will have to go to the IO that day to get your stamp- should be 30th January. When you apply on or about the 16th November the stamp you will get is for " Under consideration " and will be up to 30th January. Your RP will be stamped into your passport with this same date. Important you get the extension stamp first and the apply for the RP.

Does that seem like a sound plan?

you'll know how good the plan is when you get the under consideration stamp and see when you need to return to the immigration office. IF it's not by the time you get back to thailand, you need to tell them RIGHT THEN AND THERE and you need to show them your airfare out and back.

I have seen them adjust the under consideration stamp to allow for out of country travel before. (remember that 30 days is actually the first month of your next year extension)

- similar circumstances arose with myself in 2019 , I dealt with Chiang Mai IO. I applied for the marriage visa extension together with the RP . Sorry if I didn't make this clear previously for Adam Sharpe. I believe other IO's adopt the same approach too if the circumstances are made clear to them at the time .

I'm curious if there is one of these handy charts for females, seeing as A) we are 50% of the world's population and B) none of the financial requirements are stipulated as a farang wife of Thai... thanks.

ahhh i see. okay thanks. so when an immigration office asks for photos in front of your house with the street number and a photo on the bed with your partner, it’s literally just your local immigration being THAT cool, eh? 😎thank you!

nothing to do with whether you're a foreign male or female
@Molly *****************
everyone who gets married to a thai extensions supplies the photos every year. Usually you two in front of the address numbers, you two sitting on the couch, you two at the dining table, etc. Totally common

I’ll be curious if they come into the house this year. They didn’t last year (Covid ? )•

you know it's a total toss up as far as if they do a home visit or not. There for a while they were doing it pretty regularly, then they eased off again.

I think they'll call and tell you if they're comin' and if they don't call before your under consideration stamp is up, it means they're not coming 😛

and aside from no financial requirements, all the rest of the requirements are the same 🙂

there's NO FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS for the wife of a Thai....

(How about that for equality)

Ask your Thai immigration office. Usually you can apply for the extension of stay between 30 - 45 days PRIOR to your current extension expiration date.

BUT it's important for you to ask your Thai immigration office as the one year extension of stay as Married to Thai may require a home visitation by Thai immigration during the one month from your application date.
