How Soon Can I Apply for an ED-Visa Extension Before Traveling for Christmas?

Just a quick question for me here:

I am on an ED-visa, that expires mid January. I have not done any extensions yet. How soon before my permitted to stay date can I go to immigration and apply for an extension?

I like getting things like this done sooner rather than waiting until the last minute. Especially since I am going home to see my parents for Christmas with a permition letter from my school that I will take to immigration where I will buy a re-entry permit. So I’m curious if it’s possible to apply for the extension before I go see my parents for Christmas on a re-entry permit. Or even better, if it’s possible to apply for the extension the same time I go to buy my re-entry permit, to save time and trips to the immigration office. I am in Krabi.

I hope you all had a lovely Loy Krathong celebration yesterday!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is currently on an ED-visa set to expire mid-January and is looking to apply for an extension before traveling home for Christmas. Community responses clarify that an extension can be applied for 30 days or less prior to the expiration date, and one user shares their experience, confirming that in Krabi, applications can be made up to 45 days in advance. This allows the user to obtain both the extension and re-entry permit in one visit.

I have just been to immigration in Krabi and thought i might give an update here:

My school prepared papers for extention and re-entry permit for me, which i brought to immigration. Turns out that in Krabi you can apply for extention as far ahead of your permited to stay date as 45 days. I got both my extention and re-entry permit today, so i do not have to go back and apply for an extention right after i get back for christmas. Hope this info is usefull to someone. Have a good day!

Yep, I thought I'd read that Krabi was 45 days or less left on your current stamp to apply for an extension

Thanx (y)

You should be able to apply for an extension when you have 30 days or less left on your current entry stamp. Your school will know for sure, so ask them.

Once you get the extension you can buy a re-entry permit right after that and it will be good for the validity of your extension.

thank you. I will have to get my extension when I am back from Christmas then, as I intend to go home before it’s less than 30 days left. It’s fine, I still have 2 weeks to do it when I get back. I can get a re-entry permit for my initial 90 days on visa that I am already stamped in on too, right? I don’t have to be on an extension?

Have you obtained documents from the school for an extension of your Ed visa?

James Miller no not yet, that’s what I meant I will do by getting a permition letter from my school 😁 I have already talked with them about it, so I will give them my details before class tomorrow so they can start making the documents. I know I need those papers from the school first.

In Krabi. So that’s where I will go to immigration.
