My wife is thai. born in Thailand and moved to Germany when she was 6 she has a German passport but no thai passport or ID. She has her thai birth certificate and thai house registry. We want to go to Thailand and get her thai passport and her iD and move to Thailand. Due to covid do we still have to leave Thailand after she gets her thai passport and ID? We want to do a thai marriage visa. I am American but I also live in Germany.

Any help would be appreciated. Also yes we tried contacting the consulates they don’t answer the phones.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is seeking advice on how his Thai wife, who has a German passport but lacks Thai citizenship documents, can obtain her Thai passport and ID upon returning to Thailand. Several community members shared insights about the necessary paperwork, including the Thai birth certificate and details about her entry via the German passport. It was clarified that after obtaining her Thai passport, she would need to exit Thailand on her German passport and return on her Thai passport. Additionally, the user mentioned a successful communication with the Thai embassy which provided a travel verification document to enter Thailand without using her German passport.

Update: so I call the thai embassy and they were super helpful.

So if you don’t have a thai iD or a thai passport. You can ask for a thai travel verification document that will allow you to fly into Thailand as a thai. The document is valid for 2 months after you get it. This way you don’t have to enter Thailand as your other citizenship. So this is the route that I’m going to take and it will save us a not wanted second sandbox scheme.

Good News. 😎

After your wife gains Thai citizenship (and passport), to be here with full citizenship status she will have to leave on her German passport and return on her Thai passport. This can only be done by air.

In the meantime, it’s no problem. Her citizenship gives her the right to unlimited annual extensions to the visa that she entered on.

I think she might have to do 90 day reports and TM30 as well. I cannot remember.

@Stephen *****
she can get what they call an ancestry visa until all her paperwork is sorted
David ***********
@Stephen *****
yes, I think you should:

- get her citizenship (and passport);

- get married;

- put 400,000 in a Thai bank - in your name only - and get your O-visa;

- have her continue to meet whatever visa requirements she needs to meet

Then, when you *want* to travel, fly out on her German passport and fly back in on her Thai passport.

Whichever passport she enters the other country on is the se one she will have to use to leave that country.

If you want to visit a neighbouring country by land, she will have to use her German passport in both directions.

She has to switch passports in the air (either on the outbound trip, or on the inbound trip).

ok thank you
David ***********
@Stephen *****
I’m sure that that is not a problem. She will be recognised just the same as any Thai citizen who entered on a foreign passport.

I doubt that the relevant office would even know.

yea but we need to do a marriage visa and I don’t think they will let her do it if she isn’t recognized as a thai citizen.
David ***********
@Stephen *****
there is probably no need. Her status here will be quite close to that of a typical Thai citizen.

I married my Thai wife in Thailand /Got it legalized in the Amphur . I want to live in UK /Thailand -Will it be an easy task (Not withstanding the air fares ..She is presently on UK Visa in the UK for 33 months .Any advice would be good.😃
Daniel ************
I was in the same situation several years back. The Thai Embassy in Germany will not do anything for you. You must travel here via a Visa and go to the Amphur where she was born and apply for a Thai passport and Thai ID card there. If you have any questions or need "HELP" please PM me. I am in Ubon now just arrived on the 27th of Dec. where my wife was born. Your very "Lucky" that she has all the required paperwork to apply. Bring that all with you.
Daniel ************
Good question-Please look at my PM to you now. 😎

yea I had to get all the paperwork so we could married lol. My main concerns is after she gets her thai passport. Does she have to leave and come back into country because she will enter with her German and receive her thai passport in Thailand. So I don’t want to her to leave and come back again. We basically would be doing the sandbox 2 times.
Steve **********
Thailand has Covid too. The advantage is we all wear masks, and DeSantis is banned
Albert ********
The thai embassy will help her.

I have a friend who was in a remarkably similar situation. He is American. Wife was born in Thailand but lived in America and was a citizen since childhood. She was now in her 40s/50s.

She went to Thailand with her US passport and did a visa exempt entry. While in Thailand took her Thai birth certificate and I believe she needed a family witness or two and was able to do exactly what you are trying to do.

One she has established her Thai citizenship again obviously she can come and go to both places as she pleases. As far as you, once she has her Thai status reestablished you can do a Non O visa based on marriage to a Thai.
Marc ********
If she gets her citizenship of course she can stay.

You on the other hand cannot necessary. Not even when you are married in Thailand

Hi I have duel citizens I came here 8 months ago to Thailand with my American husband as I am half American/ Thai. We came on an OA visa yes I as well . I have my Thai ID but not a thai passport. Once I got to Thailand I had to follow the same procedure as a foreigner. For her/ I have to leave the country with her German passport and come back in on her Thai passport to be valid. Otherwise she would still be considered a foreigner. Thailand doesn’t care if your thai and carry a German passport you are consider a foreigner until you leave the country and come back in using her thai passport. If you don’t want to do another quarantine then wait and keep doing your 90 days check in until she can leave and come back with out quarantine. I am in the same predicament . Once your year is up ( if you came in on an OA ) do a marriage visa .
Marc ********
@Stephen *****
yes it dosn't make sense. I would bet my money on she will not have to leave the country.

@Marc *******
oh I don’t care about doing the sandbox I just don’t want to do it again after she gets her passport because I was told that she would have leave the country and enter on her thai passport. But it makes not since because they shouldn’t make a citizen leave just to come into country on the thai passport.
Marc ********
@Stephen *****
After she is granted citizenship she will not have to leave the country.

They will waive her tourist status after she gains citizenship. I am sure.

But the sandbox is just for entering. If she gains the citizenship before she is entering she could do the quarantine in a government facility and save some money if you guys would prefere. But I doubt it would be in her interest😅
Stephen ******
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Marc *******
yea but this is stupid. Why can’t they just waive her tourist status after she gains citizenship. Plus due to covid your telling your own citizen to leave there country to go to another country and come back as a citizen again. That’s dumb 🤣
Marc ********
@Stephen *****
Yes entering is basically for everybody the same. Citizen or not you are subject for quarantine.

And before somebody wants to contradict me again. Sandbox is also a type of quarantine.😉
Stephen ******
ORIGINAL POSTER
@Marc *******
so I basically have to pay for the sandbox scheme twice is what your telling me?
Marc ********
@Stephen *****
She will not need to leave

i more than meet the requirements to stay. I just need to know if my wife will need to leave so that she will be recognized as a thai citizen.
James ********
@Marc *******
I am not telling you that you're wrong.

But...Have a Good Day
Marc ********
@James *******
Yes meet the requirements. But you have to meet them. And it's not that easy as you try it to look.

You don't get my point but that's ok. Internet is full of people always want to tell you you are wrong😅
James ********
@Marc *******
its easy for an expat legally married to a Thai to live and work in Thailand. Just meet the requirements.
Kool *******
@Marc *******
you are not on, or have ever applied, for a extension based on marriage have you? The only time it is turned down, and why there is the 30 days under consideration stamp first, is if they do make a visit to where you life, and why one of the required documents is a hand drawn map from the closest main road to where you live, and they do not see signs of you living together, even to the point of asking neighbors, yes, they will turn you down, as some do try to scam the system, but, if you are legally married, meet the financial requirement, provide all the documentation, and in fact are living as husband and wife, you are not turned down.
Marc ********
@James *******
Yes not necessary. In other countries you can stay automatically when married to a citizen of the country. Not in Thailand. No guarantee for nothing
Marc ********
@Kool ******
No it is not guaranteed. You are entiteled to apply.
Kool *******
@Marc *******
that is not exactly true. A type O visa extension based on marriage to a Thai spouse, listed as Thai wife on your extension stamp does in fact allow you to stay in Thailand in one year extension phazes.
James ********
@Marc *******
say that again? The legally married husband cannot stay in Thailand with his Thai wife?
