My mother in law lost her Thai ID and her Thai passport is expired. She is in the US with a green card but we have tickets to Thailand in January. What are our options?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual is experiencing a situation where their mother-in-law has lost her Thai ID, and her Thai passport is expired. She is currently in the US with a green card, and they have a flight to Thailand scheduled for January. The discussion emphasizes that Thais can potentially travel back to Thailand on an expired passport, and contacting the Thai embassy for assistance in obtaining a new passport or emergency travel document is crucial. Many comments highlight the need to check her status in the embassy's database and possibly obtain a new ID upon returning to Thailand. There are varying opinions on the feasibility of traveling with an expired passport, particularly regarding airline policies and the urgency of getting a new passport.

I'm making sure she is in the database before taking her all the way to Chicago or New York, but I am in contact.

TG is Thai airway. If she is traveling with TG, she can use her expired passport.

Had the same scenario with my wife. We sorted at the embassy in LA. But if the fellas are right about flying with expired passport home (check airlines!) It's quick and easy to get one in Thailand. US citizens can not travel home with expired passports. There was a Covid exception but it expired.

She's got a green card so hearing now she can likely get back in.

She can travel directly to Thailand on an expired passport. Countries can't refuse permission for citizens to enter.A valid passport gets you into OTHER countries.

I get you. But we need her to come back home. She will not leave the country without a valid passport to get back in.

Yes, but she can renew in Thailand very quickly. They only take a week, I think and rush job next day.

I am in contact with Consulate in New York. They have to check that she is in the data base, then she can come in for new ID and Passport. Wish us luck. She's been in the states for almost 50 years

@Angelique ****************
if she’s been in USA for 50 year u should get her usa citizenship. Keep the Thai passport as well and have dual citizenship.

Contact the Thai embassy, they will advise what to do. Emergency passports can be issued pretty quickly.

Just realised your travelling in January. Get a new passport.

as ID I believe you are correct. So apply for ID card then passport. ID Card is same day and passport is a week. Google both for required documents

She should contact Thai embassy and try to get a new passport or some sort of permission to travel back to Thailand

I believe Thais can travel to Thailand on an expired Thai passport.

She could contact a Thai consulate or embassy in the US about getting a new passport too?

She’ll have to renew in Thailand

she would have to get a new passport while she was in Thailand or no airline will let her travel out
