TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual is experiencing a situation where their mother-in-law has lost her Thai ID, and her Thai passport is expired. She is currently in the US with a green card, and they have a flight to Thailand scheduled for January. The discussion emphasizes that Thais can potentially travel back to Thailand on an expired passport, and contacting the Thai embassy for assistance in obtaining a new passport or emergency travel document is crucial. Many comments highlight the need to check her status in the embassy's database and possibly obtain a new ID upon returning to Thailand. There are varying opinions on the feasibility of traveling with an expired passport, particularly regarding airline policies and the urgency of getting a new passport.
TG is Thai airway. If she is traveling with TG, she can use her expired passport.

My daughter travel to Thailand when her Thai passport had expired no problems but my wife had booked a place not to far from the airport and she got a new one the next morning I can ask for the address if you need it
Had the same scenario with my wife. We sorted at the embassy in LA. But if the fellas are right about flying with expired passport home (check airlines!) It's quick and easy to get one in Thailand. US citizens can not travel home with expired passports. There was a Covid exception but it expired.
She's got a green card so hearing now she can likely get back in.

She can travel directly to Thailand on an expired passport. Countries can't refuse permission for citizens to enter.A valid passport gets you into OTHER countries.
Yes, but she can renew in Thailand very quickly. They only take a week, I think and rush job next day.

I am in contact with Consulate in New York. They have to check that she is in the data base, then she can come in for new ID and Passport. Wish us luck. She's been in the states for almost 50 years
