Hi my thai gf has just had our baby in australia after being here on a student visa for the past 11months. We are going to travel back to thailand in the near future and I would like to understand what I need for the baby.

Do I need to get our baby a australian and thai passport? And would I do this before going to thailand or process her thai passport there ?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user is seeking advice on obtaining passports for their newborn baby, who was born in Australia to a Thai mother on a student visa. They are unsure whether to apply for both Australian and Thai passports before traveling to Thailand or if they can process the Thai passport in Thailand. Respondents suggest registering the birth with the Royal Thai Embassy in Australia and obtaining both passports, advising to leave Australia on the Australian passport and enter Thailand on the Thai passport.

Get both passports, leave AU on the Aussie PP, enter Thailand on the Thai PP, you should get a Thai birth Certif from the Thai Consulate ....I did this for my son, born in Dubai ..... no worries mate

just being born in Australia doesn't make him Australian. That stopped in the 70s. Having an Australian parent gives you the right to an Australian Passport and citizenship.

i have many Thai friends , wive's of aussies who have been living in Oz for years ...all are dual citizens ...interesting, so what would YOU call a newborn with a Thai parent who has both citizenships , that was born in Australia...because his birth certificate says it all really

to get a US passport you need a US notification of birth, to get a Thai passport you need a Thai birth certif from the consulate, then you get a birth certif in the country you are born in, in this case Dubai, UAE.... 1 in English, 1 in Arabic ..... a result in getting everything done to avoid future problem .... He'll be 22 soon

There’s been similar posts and you need to register the birth with the Royal Thai Embassy in the country the baby was born.

I can remember reading at least two other posts where this was not done and couldn’t be done in Thailand.

For peace of mind at least check that.
